Do I need anything to drive in the snow?
Find answers to your legal question.

Do I need anything to drive in the snow?

I am going from Los Angeles to Salt Lake City, Utah next week. Do I need anything to drive to there like chains, special kind of tires, or anything else? I am just going for 3 days. I have never driven in the snow.
Additional Details
A lot of great answers. Very tough to choose the best one though

If you stay on I-15, you should have no problems. Check the forecast weather for any winter storms that may be on the way in. The road crews may not be able to keep the interstate open until after the storm passes. The higest elevations you'll be traveling through is about 6500 ft in southern Utah. That would be a concern for winter storms.

If you are going to drive the back roads into the mountains, you will probably need chains + snow tires before you are allowed onto those roads. Check locally.

Driving in snow: Take it slow. Think at least 5 car lengths in front of you. If that car has his brakes on, don't wait for the one in front of you to apply their brakes; it's too late. Brake easy. If you skid, release your brakes (non ABS cars). Then it takes lots of practice.

not really just drive slow the roads will be plowed, if you really wanna spend the money you can buy studded tires but other then youll be find. however if u have a rear wheel drive car then id suggest putting like 2-3 50 pound bags of sand in your trunk to keep the tires from sliding

the best thing you can do is take an extra day to get there and take a load of common sense and a healthy respect for ice and sno, drive carefully at a reduced speed and dont take any silly chances, a torch and blanket, some extra food and water, a little shovel are also handy items to have for emergencies, if the car gets a bit drifty let the speed off a bit and brake early and a littler than normal so as not to cause ther tyres to skid, have a safe journey

you should get time chains you dont put them on unless you are stuck or sliding if you drive at 60 miles per hour with chains on there are going to snap and cause damage to your car or some one elces just drive slower then normal and they should have plows out anyways you should be good you dont want to buy snow tires just for 3 days you should take look at your tires see if you need to replace then how is your tread are thay bald are they slased how is your breaks check that stuff out how are your belts

you need to at least be prepared for bad roads with all season tires. you could spend a lot of money for 3 days to be totally prepared. they do keep the roads much better than they used to. At least have a good light and some warm clothes in case you have to walk for help<

Carry a small shovel in case u get stuck and a bag of rock salt. If u are not going to Salt Lake often the tires are not cost effective and neither is chains. Take a flashlite, blanket and some food, like peanut butter, crackers, heater meals etc. U should be fine with those items and remember...dont get in a hurry, take it slow.

Buy some snow chains and if you don't need them, return them....

You should put chains around your tires. I've never driven in snow, so hopefully someone who has should help u out a little better, but i just wanted to say that because i've heard snow driving stories.
