Do You Have To Have A Driver-Side Mirror?

I was driving around Orlando, FL today and I noticed that the car in front of me was tricked out with an annoying and loud speaker system. Since I was at a red light, I stared a little more and noticed that the driver actually removed his driver-side mirror and replaced it with another speaker. Is this legal? Are you allowed to remove side mirrors? And install speakers into the spot where the glass should be?

Figures that the car was a beater. I doubt the driver has insurance - I made sure to keep my distance.

In most, if not all states, an exterior driver side mirror IS required by law. As long as the vehicle has a rear view mirror mounted inside the vehicle, a passenger side exterior mirror is not required by law.

Yes And you must have a mirror and a windshield mounted rear view mirror. It is alright if you dont have a passenger side mirror BUT you must have a driver side mirror. You must be able to see in the rear of you car or on the side Every passenger automobile manufactured after January 1, 1965 and registered shall be equipped with an interior mirror and an exterior mirror on the driver's side. i dont even think you would pass inspection without side mirrors
from my own note i think it would be unsafe to drive without one.

Yes you must have a drivers side mirror and yes you were wise for keeping your distance from that moron.
(in many cities there are codes against loud radios, usually along the lines of "cannot be audible beyond 50/100/whatever feet from vehicle" so he may have been in violation of that too)

In most states you do not have to have a driver side mirror. I don't know about the speakers. He could get into trouble if the noise is too high.

Actually, I do think that the driver side mirrors are legally required, but the passenger side models are optional. (That's why some of the entry level cars from some makers don't have 'em)

I'm sure you'll probably get a reply from someone in law enforcement if it is worthy of a ticket. If no reply and it's still bugging you, you check out NHTSA.GOV (National Highway Transportation Safety Administration's website.) I took a quick peak but nothing jumped out at me.
