The headlight / key warning tone is there for your benefit.
Yes you are being punished for failing to turn the headlights off before opening the door, you will be punished again for getting mad due to your own stupidity and kicking the door when you go to sell your car and loose several hundred dollars due to the damage to the door.
Many cars will turn the lights off automatically but all will scream at you for opening the door when they are still on. |

actually no, my brother has a 1999 Cadillac Deville. He never worrys about the light since they turn on automaticly when its dark out, also when he turns off the car then closes the door the lights shut off. Problem solved... you must get a Cadillac now! |

This is less annoying than not being able to start the car because you left the headlights on for so long that the battery is dead.
It is not just American cars; my Honda does the same thing.
Also, I used to have a Toyota that would turn off the lights automatically; so it is not just Fiats that do that. |

My brother has a 2 year old fiesta that does that, he wired up a vespa bleeper to it so now it f@rts!
Also fairly recent mercs have this nuisance, up to 10 years old, not sure when newer than that..
I have just bought a $42.000 Volkswagen Passat (brand new model 2009) that will also kind of politely "warn" me acoustically that the lights must be turned off or I guess it'll carry on bleeping? I'll let it bleep to see it it goes off by itself.
My fiat ducato 1991 turned the lights off by itself so I am now also having to adjust, I had taken it for granted.
I guess people don't mind this since they are suggesting to "turn them off" before you get out.
Clever lot indeed, I might use a stick it note on my steering wheel to help me remember. |

You sound like a free spirit that got the wrong car. Fords WILL squeal at you.
"better than the battery going flat" "you are being stupid for forgetting"
See the above? They are NOT free spirits and are perfect people for squealers.
There's a clever way: Get an Alfa. Any year.

I never had an American car so I can't comment.
I have a 37 years old Alfa Romeo that switches lights off automatically. |

Almost all new vehicles headlights will turn off automatically after 10 minutes as well as any other lights you may have left on.Your Ford may be to old to have this feature but just be sure you shut off the lights before exiting the vehicle. |
