Do ambulances drive around like cops do?

Are they always driving around like the police. Or do they get called like the fire department.....?????
Additional Details
can they be on call to keep an eye on somebody, for health reasons.

No.They are dispatched.You may on occasion see an ambulance parked at a fast food place or convenience store returning from responding to a call,but they are always in touch with the dispatcher.They do not patrol the streets like police.They have enough emergencies without patrolling the streets looking for them.They are usually met at the scene by the police.

they get called, cops drive around to find speeders, and stuff like that...what would ambulances do? even cops though cant just randomly go after someone without letting their station or whatever know.

at the hospital that I live near.. they actually send the ambulances out in different directions to where they will always be closer to you than what it would be to just leave the hospital. I think they have three sent out in all directions at any one time with one at the hospital on call.

I would hate that job though.. they don't drive around all that much. they just have to go to a certian area and sit.

they drive around and use there sirens to get to their lunch breaks quicker
