Do buses have air bags?

the driver's seat of a bus

NO AIR BAGS AND NO SEAT BELTS

because school buses are already incredibly safe vehicles. Gone are the days when you could break your nose on the metal bars that ran atop the low-backed seats, which did nothing to prevent whiplash during sudden stops.

Today's school-bus seats are high-backed, tightly packed and heavily padded - or "compartmentalized," in bus lingo - designed to absorb crash impact the way a car's airbag might.

(Many motor-coach companies, like Greyhound, say compartmentalizing is a big reason their buses are also belt-less).

As a result, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the fatality rate for school buses is only 0.2 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles traveled, compared to 1.5 deaths for cars using the same calculation.

But get this: Compartmentalization is most helpful in rear or frontal collisions, but not so helpful with side-impact crashes.

In other words, kids are safe on belt-less buses - as long as they're not hit from the side.

School buses don't and at this time aren't required.

Not that I know of. We have over 20 buses in our fleet including: Gilligs, Freightliners, Internationals and Thomas' and none of them have airbags. Two of these buses are also Prevosts ( the expensive kind) and they don't either. I don't think it is necessary since buses can't accelerate well or go very fast anyway.

no airbags, but at least you get a seat belt, unlike your passengers.

Buses (&trucks) do not have elaborate restraint systems because the average deceleration during accidents is much smaller than in the car.
If you imagine a small ball hitting a big one, the big one hardly moves but the small one bounces off in the opposite direction. This happens if a car hits the bus.
So the bus driver and passengers will not be thrown forward with such big force as the ones in the car.

In Europe are now two-point seat belts obligatory on new long-distance busses, but this was introduced some two years ago only and just because some people in Brussels (seat of European Union administration) have nothing better to do :-)

A ton of research has gone into airbags and complete Supplemental Restraint systems (SRS) for buses. However none have made it to the real world as far as public transportation. Some "buses" or "RV's" in the private sector do have SRS and Airbags for the driver and front passenger. SafeCo is a SRS development company owned by BMW and has released a ready for sale to school bus manufactures a side curtain that will deploy in cases of a school bus turn over. Other than that I am not aware of anything else. The National Safety and Transportation Administration has not mandated any SRS for Buses as of this date.
