i live in illinois and i have a sword but i was wondering if it was legal to carry it around town. my license was suspended so i cant drive so lets say i want to take it over to a friends house to show them or something like that. do i need a permit to carry it sheathed or blade out? or if i just go for a stroll around town and get into a particularly bad part of town can i use it for self defense? basically what im asking is what do i have to do to be able to legally carry a sword and if situation demands use it also?

i don't want to hear oh u shouldn't have a sword to begin with or u shouldn't carry weapons...

Is it sharp or blunt? If it is blunt, and you are going to or from some sort of martial arts or fencing class, you probably would be okay. If it is sharp, leave it home.

As far as self defense, a sword is lethal force, and your assailant had better have a gun or something, or you'd be charged with criminal assault or attempted murder or something.

im not really sure if it is legal or not but. my advice is..
as far as walking through town with it, it will be ok(with the sword in the sheath;however if you take it out and/or start swinging it around at all, it is considered a weopon) oh and remember, Do Not take it in any stores, not because of the law but most stores do not allow these things and they will probably call the rent-a-cop on u lol.
as far as self defense, i dont know. but if it was me i woudlnt care id cut-em-up if they were about to harm me.

In most states 4 inches is the longest fixed blade you can legally carry and even then it cannot be concealed.
