planes just fly like birdies

Several planes can back up either by using the thrust reverser on jet engines, or reversing the pitch of the propeller blades on turbo prop engines.

They generally use a tug to push them away from the terminal for safety reasons. The massive amount of air moved when backing up would be a danger to the ground crew and could damage the terminal.

First of all airplanes are not driven by the wheels but by engines that either turn a prop or push air out the rear. This means that there is no reverse "gear". However most larger aircraft are equipped with reverse thrusters to slow the plane down on landing. They are not very maneuverable at slow speeds on the ground. Therefore the use of a "tractor" to move them in tight places is normal.

No rear view mirrors on air planes.

Yes, because the plane is so long that it needs help to turn round then after that it moves on its own

Mr. Knowitall
Some airplanes are able to reverse their engines. They do this to brake on the runway when landing. They could use this to move backwards, I suppose, but it would be dangerous because they're big clumsy things and they couldn't see where they're going.

Once the plane is on the ground, they use a 'tractor' to move it precisely where they want it.

Using the thrust reversers, which do not reverse the engines but redirect the thrust about 45 deg up/fwd AND down/fwd, and several spotters on the ground, a plane COULD back up at the terminal, but all kinds of trash, dirt, fumes etc etc would be blown all over the place, breaking windows and creating all manner of havoc. Easier to just tow it out.

Airplanes do NOT reverse their engines.

Propeller driven planes can change the pitch of their propellers, but I don't know of any that can change it all the way around.

Jet aircraft have a reverse thrusting capability, but that just means that the jet's thrust is redirected so that some of the exhaust is driven forward. This is used to help the craft slow down after landing. This redirected thrust is not usually enough to actually "push" the plane backwards.

The reason little "cars" are used to move planes around the apron is becuse pilots do not have rearview mirrors to be able to see what is behind them. Not only is there a driver in the "little car," there is also a person who walks along side the aircraft, helping guide the driver and to watch out for hazzards.

OK first of all the planes landing gear is not powered by anything the bigger planes like a Boeing 737 for example has reverse thrust but it is not used during a pushback they use a small car type thing called a TUG and during this is when the pilot will start the engines anymore questions feal free to email me

planes have no reverse gear..
they have no driving gears at all
Plane move forward from the engine.
it push the plane forward only.

that is why they need it to be push back when leaving for take off.

i work at the airport...

and if a plane that is idling in the runway too long and shut off the engine..they can't move so need to be towed in...because they can't start the engine again.

Please dont give wrong answer.
Plane can NOT go reverse..
the engine can not go backward....

UCANTCME
Reverse thrusters.
