oh goodness! :(
I was driving with my mom, it started with confusion, here's why:
there were about 6 cars in front of me and right before we got to the intersection all of those cars merged to the far left to turn left. "what a coincidence" i thought. so i stayed on the lane to go straight. and i figured that they all merged to the left because across the middle of the intersection on the lane that i had to drive into was blocked by construction, so i thought "crap! i dont think im supposed to be here!" then my mom said "just go around it."
Then thats when i noticecd aftter one line of traffice had gone, there was no more traffic flowing through and i looked at all the lights of all sides and they were red. so i was like "what the heck is going on" so we thought the didnt work, and that we were supposed to treat it like a stop sign, and we thouhgt it was my turn to go, and half way there, .... the stupid light turns green!!!!!!! aaaaaaaaaaahhhh!!!! whats going to happen?????????

no i didnt see any bright flashes. (atleast not that i remember) and i would have noticed because it was dark. how bright is the flash anyway?

You SAY all the lights were red, in all directions, but you really don't know that. For example, you wouldn't be able to see the left arrow lights of the oncomming side of the road. In fact, because of the way the lenses are designed to be directional, you probably wouldn't be able to see the turn arrows of either direction of cross traffic.
What PROBABLY happened is that the construction equipment's location may have triggered the light sensors in the road, fooling the system into thinking there was traffice where there wasn't. The lights turned, accordingly. After a preprogrammed time, the lights will sequence and, eventually, turn green for the traffic in the other lanes.
If there really was a malfunction, there IS a time at which you, the driver, can decide this is so, but, while most don't, I have SEEN some intersections that can have a driver wait as much as two minutes for the sequence to cycle a green light in any one direction. Two minutes can seem like a LONG time, especially if you don't see other traffic exept for the honking drivers behind you.
My advice, next time, is for you to wait, at least a minute, if not more, before you assume the lights are not working properly. Ignore the impatient drivers behind you. THEY don't drive your car for you. A minute or two's delay won't kill them, and THEY won't pay your ticket for you if you get caught.
Red light cameras only take pictures at the time the lights change. So you will not likely get a red light citation from a camera. If there was a police officer who HAPPENED to see you cross against the red light, and he determined that the lights WERE functioning properly, then he would have stopped you and issued the citation on the spot. |

I guess you'll find out in a couple of weeks if you get a ticket in the mail. If you crossed the stop line before the light turned green, I'll think it triggered a picture of a red light violation. But I'm not sure. |
