Do traffic safety measures like speed limits, seat belt laws, ect actually help society?

I mean besides fewer accidents, how about lower insurance rates, greater economic growth and so on?

That's a very interesting question.

Do traffic safety laws help (or hurt) society?

Well I think society would survive either way, and the truth is probably somewhere in the middle.

Sure they help. Without speed limits and enforcement in critical areas (like schools, residential areas, metro areas, etc.) of course there would be more accidents.

Laws against following too closely, speeding, reckless operation, stopping for a school bus, etc. are generally good laws until lawmakers and communities begin to abuse them.

For example, dropping the speed limit along a stretch of expressway for no other obvious reason that for the local cops to raise revenue for their community is a ridiculous and arguably unsafe practice that needs to stop.

Did the seat belt law really need to be a law? I wear my seatbelt all the time! Statistically it makes sense and I make all of my passengers put one on too. However, did we really need a law to enforce this? I know plenty of people who don't wear one and the law didn't make any difference for them, they still don't.

Do we really need to pass laws restricting cell phone use? Yes, its true, there are plenty of bad drivers out there. There are plenty of bad drivers with cell phones. People see the bad driving, people see the cell phone and immediately conclude that the bad driving is the fault of the phone. I personally think that's awfully poor logic, but that's my opinion.

In conclusion, we need laws to help regulate and protect society from itself. But we need to be reasonable with these laws and be careful not to cross onto the slippery slope of the government controlling every aspect of our lives.

Good question, but very vague. Seat belt laws do nothing but give cops more authority and in my opinion it's the governments way of telling you what have to do in violation of our constitutional rights. Their reason for it is for safety but tell me, how does a bad driver not wearing their seat belt save another life? It only can help or hurt the individual and it's stupid. There are countries with no speed limit or higher speed limits, and from what I've read, they have less accidents. How about making laws for bad driver's without regards to drinking, what they're wearing, etc... If you have an accident, that's bad driving. Why can people half blind get a license, can't speak or read english do the same, and have very little driving ability get licensed but those that have had zero accidents for many years get suspended and arrested if they speed 5 over the limit and have had more than 2 drinks of alcohol in their body?

All the laws of the road are for is generating revenue for the states and cities those roads are in. Plus it provides jobs for power mad people to inforce these laws

The BMV keeps track of speeding tickets thus higher premiums are possible.Excess speed also burns more fuel.Check your insurance policy most companys give discounts on seat belts, security systems.anti lock breaks etc.

Technically no, because we are human and we make alot of mistakes. Even though we have all those safety measures it is up to the individual to make the choice whether or not to apply those measures. Now if we all learned not to make so many mistakes on the road we wouldn't need as much of highway patrol and insurance policies. Which would make the cost of the insurance go down and i cant say much about the gas, but now a days every one wants more money. So as for greater economic growth there will be, but lower insurance rates no way, because we all want easy money from each collision we are in. Thats why they are "accidents" easy money to get from the insurance. Until we all learn not to bump into each other there will be no lower insurance rates.

They help to keep you safe.Since everyone is on the road basically they do in a way.Keeping your self safe usually helps others.

No, because dumb people who should not procreate are being told to drive slower and wear seatbelts. This allows more of them to survive and reproduce. The human race is becoming lazier and dumber.

If we didn't t have laws and regulations, people would NOT have rights. Without rights there is no respect for anyone or anything....if we have no laws NO ONE WOULD BE SAFE!! Laws are made for people's safety and well-beign and order. We need order so we may sleep and wake up willing to live. Since the beggining of time, there are rules, laws that should be followed. It is when men "humans" deside that they don't want to follow the law....BAD THINGS WILL HAPPEN. Speed limits..immagine no speed limit by the playgrounds or your house...how many people would die due to accidents. There is a reason for everything and we must change accourding to the season.....diffenrent rules depending where you are, the time and place. Thank GOD for all the smart rules. If there is a rule or law you don't like or agree to, then don't complain ... try to change it. GOD also gave us a brain.
