YES IT IS THE LAW!

Question: When are turn signals required to be used and does this include changing lanes?

Answer: MCL 257.648states in part. "The driver...before stopping or turning from a direct line, shall first see that the stopping or turning can be made in safety and shall give a signal as required...". Common sense and state law agree that whenever you are turning, a signal is required, however, much debate has occurred over whether that language required the use of turn signals when simply changing lanes.

The Michigan Court of Appeals has finally clarified the language in MCL 257.648 requiring the use of a signal when changing lanes, or "turning from a direct line." Their decision--published, and therefore binding on lower courts--states in summary "...a reasonable person of ordinary intelligence is not required to speculate about the phrase's meaning, and MCL 257.648 provides fair notice of what conduct is proscribed. We hold that MCL 257.648 requires drivers to use a turn signal when changing lanes on a highway and is not unconstitutionally vague."

It is the law anytime a car moves right or left out of the lane they are in the turn signal must be used. Can you not figure out how they work.

Any change of lane or direction requires a signal to be made. Not everyone following you may be aware it is only a turn lane, especially if they are using a cell phone or otherwise not paying attention.
Get in the habit of using your indicators, after all. the power you use doesn't cause global warming, like some idiots think it does.

It's the law, but you won't get a ticket for not using your turn signal to turn right. But you should always use your turn signals, especially at night. Just so people know what you're doing.

Its not a law but it helps to inform other drivers.....plus it just good to do.

Well it doesn't hurt to always use your turn signal. Why wouldn't you? You should probably just try and get in the habit of doing so.

Your turn signal is just to let others know what you're going to do so they'll know to slow down when you're about to do something and it won't be a surprise to them.

Just use your judgment. In some cases, using your turn signal is optional, such as if you're on a rural road and about to turn off with nobody behind you - there wouldn't be much point in turning your signal on then.

But if you're on a busy highway and there's a bunch of people behind you, ALWAYS be sure to turn your turn signal on; just get in the habit of doing it... it's not too much of a hassle and not too hard to do to just flip the switch :)

It could save you and the people around you a lot of trouble if you just be sure to use it routinely, almost like a habit, every time you need to turn or switch lanes.
