They aren't. They flip much too easily because of their higher center of gravity. The death rate in single-vehicle SUV crashes is about 5 times higher than in cars, and the overall death rate is about double that of cars. |

Only in the mind of the driver. |

Depends, “SUV” is an extremely broad term, there are SUVs that are safer than average, and there are some that are far below average.
But in a nutshell, due to the rollover factor, I do not believe SUVs are any safer, and may in fact be more dangerous than a comparable sized sedan. |

I have heard/seen people surviving in small cars and dying in SUVs. I believe, it depends on the situation as a person driving a small car will never take risk to overtake, plunge, or bypass risky situations and the accident too are smaller (generally;comparatively). But a person driving the SUVs behaves like the SUV. He overtakes, jumps and tries to drive in a hollywood style. The accidents are bigger too. So, safety lies in the mind of the driver and in the driving habits not whether he drives a 'safer' car. Take Lady Diana's example. I still find it difficult to believe that the Mercedes she was travelling in was 'not a safer' car. I know one Mitsubishi Pajero accident on the highway in India where it sommersaulted a no. of times and the girl sitting in the back died (the driver survived). So, it's the driver's mind...how he drives. If his mind is 'safe'...he is 'safer'. |

Safer than what? |

Toyota Prius vs. Ford Excursion. I'll take the big one any day. Rollover dangers are exaggerated, and a good driver will know how to control the vehicle. |

I know they give a false sense of security, and will flip over, if corners are taken too sharply. |

generally yes because they are larger. the only problem is, they have a high center of gravity and tend to roll much easier, but all in all, if had to choose what I would be in if I were in an accident, it would be an SUV or a full size pick up. |

They are only safer if you get hit. They are a pain to drive, they roll over easier, they are harder to steer, and you are more likely to CAUSE an accident when you are driving one for these reasons. The safest cars are actually sports cars, because they were designed to be easy to control, and to protect the driver in high speed wrecks. |
