I do sometimes in the summer, and no, it's not illegal in any state, that's a myth. |

You bet it's better! You can feel the car MUCH more when you're barefoot. Since I'm barefoot most of the time anyway, it just makes sense.
And NO! It's NOT illegal to drive barefoot. There are no laws on the books in any of the 50 states that prohibits driving barefoot. That's an urban legend, that needs to die!

I usually drive barefoot as my foot is directly on the pedal and i can "feel" how much i need to push the medal...if you know what i mean? When I'm wearing a shoe (they are always different heights) its a bit hard for me because of judging how much to press the pedal with the shoe on. |

Yes, whenever practical. You get a better feeling for the car and thus better control. BTW - it is perfectly legal and no state has a law against it. |

I've only done it once and I didn't like it. I don't like the way that it feels. I think I'm a better drive with shoes. |

i have always heard it was illegal, but my BF is a police officer, and he said he has always heard it was too, but never has he actually seen a law on it, or a code to write a ticket for it....nor does he care to look to write one for that...i drive better bare foot, and so does he.... |

I'll drive w/my shoes next to me on the floorboard if my feet hurt or I'm wearing sandals. Texas Monthly has disproven that old myth about it being illegal here to drive barefoot. |

It's fine to drive barefoot. In spite of persistent myths, there are NO laws against driving barefoot. Unfortunately, this myth is so common that even some cops believe it... but everyone who believes this please see source and stop spreading this falsity. Some cops are convinced it's unsafe and even though they know it's not illegal may try to write you up for unsafe or reckless driving, however please see the second and third link in the source, for two sites (one from the Michigan PD, one from an Australian newspaper) making it clear that driving barefoot is no more unsafe than many types of footwear that are regularly worn and could even be considered safer than many kinds of shoes.
In an accident, a sturdy boot/closed shoe would provide protection but all the flipflops, sandals and open shoes that many people wear all summer long won't make any difference. As people often tend to do, this argument singles out bare feet while the argument applies to at least some footwear too. |

It kind of hurts with a stick shift so not very often. Only if I have been wearing extremely uncomfortable shoes that have been hurting all day. And it surly doesn't improve my driving. |
