Do you drive barefoot and do you think it is safe?

I have driven a car and a truck barefoot. It is illegal in some countries and not in others. As far as I know it's perfectly safe as far as driving is concerned - probably more so than wearing four-inch heels. The safety issue is that in the event of an accident, your feet could essentially be destroyed as they have no protection - and insurance companies may not provide coverage if you were barefoot when the accident occurs. Driving a motorbike barefoot is illegal pretty much everywhere and I would guess very unsafe.

This is a myth that has been around for years. In no US states is it illegal to drive barefoot.

This has been verified by the American Automobile Association, www.barefooters.org, & also www.pedolgroup.com.

This question was also on several of those myth-busting shows. Once again it has been verified.

It is actually recommended to drive barefoot if you are wearing flip flops, backless shoes, high heels, or any shoes that your foot can slip out of or impair your driving.

Wow - For the cajillionth time, people: Driving barefoot is not illegal in ANY state in the U.S. You can look up your state's driving laws on-line.

Once you get over your barefoot-phobias, you might realize that not only is driving barefoot perfectly legal in every state in the U.S., it is also arguably much safer than wearing clunky, thick soled shoes. I can get a better feel for the pedals barefoot than someone wearing Doc Martin's or stiletto high heels, for example.

I do everything in my Barefeet, including driving, and yes for me it's safer.

I drive barefoot most of the time. I had a car that's brake pedal would stick, I could grasp it with my toes and pull it back but only if I was barefoot.

I don't and if you think about it, it really makes sense that you would have better control of the gas and brake pedals if you drove barefooted and is it legal....

It may not be illegal, but it is not as safe as driving with shoes. When I say safe I mean in terms of what happens in case of an accident; also, when I say shoes I am talking about real shoes, not sandals or heels. Driving barefoot is disgusting to say the least.

I do on occasion, and I believe it is very comfortable. However, it is also very illegal. Plus, if you have a female passenger in the car who has no shoes on, and she is a minor, you can get hit with a statutory rape charge. Nice, huh?

I do not. I also believe that it is illegal most places you go. It is also taught in most driver's ed classes that it is unsafe. It is supposed to make it harder to keep your foot on the pedal which is very bad during heavy breaking. It makes it more likely that you could hurt your foot on the various pieces of plastic that are not designed to be around bare feet and things such as pebbles, twigs and other debris. The pedals of your car (especially an everyday driver or work vehicle) are very dirty and are prone to be much more disgusting than anything I'd want my bare feet on (especially in places like the Midwest will all this snow, slush, rain, mud, dust and so on).

As far as footwear while driving, your safest bet is to wear comfortable shoes or boots (closed toe). Heals and sandles, mostly flip-flops, are more likely to make it harder and unsafe to drive.
