I drive busses in london ... It doesnt matter too much what you do because most of the time the traffic is so snarled up we hardly move.

Very good question. Anyone who completed any Advance Driving or Performance Driving school will never again drive with just one hand on the steering wheel. I always drive with both hands at 9 and 3 o'clock and I will give you a few reasons why:

1. Steering is the main control of the vehicle. If you spend a good amount of time learning advanced steering wheel maneuvers, you will feel as you have no control at all when you take one hand off the wheel.

2. Lots of higher speed accidents occur due to the fact that drivers overcorrect the steering when the car begins to oversteer or understeer. When you have fractions of a second to save the situation you better have both hands controlling the wheel or you will not be able to

3. If you want to be a good driver, you have to cover the very basics of safe driving and car control and practice them at all times. Having both hands on the wheel is one of those basics. If you drive with one hand - you cannot be a good driver because you have no control - those who think they do are wrong.

Im glad you asked this - its not a silly, but a very important question. This very thing costs lives every day and is completely overlooked by more than 98% of the drivers in US. Always drive with both hands - after awhile you will notice the difference the way you can feel the car at all times through the steering wheel.

yes-if u blow a tire youll wish u had both hands on the wheel

I haven't done that silly two-handed death grip on the wheel bit since I took the test for my driver's license. And that was many, many years ago. Like everyone else, I was forced to back then.

From what I see, I'm not alone. Nobody I have ever ridden with has done that either. And if you glance around, you probably won't see more than one driver in ten who does.

Anyone who cannot steer a vehicle with one hand has no business on the road.

Rapid Fire
Both hands in the automatic equipped cars and in the school bus. But I also have a manually equipped car and a truck. I am ashamed to say that I do have a tendency to rest my hand on the gearshifter more than I should. My wife claims that it is a substitute for my Johnson. I have no idea what she is ranting about. LOL.
I really do know better. I've had two defensive driving courses in the last year.

silly master mechanics.

I drive with one hand. Depsite what some mislead dope said, you have better control with one hand, due to increased sensitivity to feedback. Only when one hand cannot keep up with fast manuevering during racing, etc do I use two hands and even then it's a hybrid approach, not some ridiculous "10 and 2" circus act.

The people that grip the wheel with both hands with the strength of a gorilla are the ones I worry about. They couldn't manuever a turtle if they had to. It shows you they lack confidence and probably shouldn't be on the road at all. Lack of confidence and nervousness account for a large portion of accidents.

Sometimes. If I do it is in bad weather conditions or heavy traffic. In light traffic or on quiet roads - it tends to be one hand on the wheel!

I always drive with two hands.........better control overall.

Normally i drive with one hand at 12 O'clock. The only time I really use two hands is on the drag strip or on a road course running 75+mph.

Not usually, but if I am in a lot of traffic I sometimes do, or if I'm going through a series of turns.

the correct position for your hands is ten and two on the wheel. i would hope you remember this from driving class. if not your one of the idiots i worry about every time i have to drive.

If I am driving particularly fast, then yes. I like the feel of control. If I am just cruising, then no. I usually just put one or two fingers on the bottom of the wheel while I rest my arm in my lap.

depends. in city driving, i usually use two hands because there's lots of turning and avoiding potholes and such. On the highway, I usually just use one hand.
