Do you have any tips on how to drive a U-Haul with a car trailer?

I'm moving across country next month and will be driving a 17' U-Haul with a towing mechanism behind for my car. I've never driven anything larger than an SUV before. I'm scared I'll do something to damage my car while turning into a gas station or at a traffic light or something.
Does anybody have any tips on how to do things like turn on streets or into gas stations without sideswiping a light pole or something?

You will need to remember that you are higher and longer than the vehicles you are accustomed to driving & will need to take turns a little wider, but without leaving your lane if possible.
The type of car hauler will make a difference too.For example- a 2 wheel dolly, meaning that you only drive the front wheels of your car up on it will make your towed equipment shorter in length than if you are pulling a car trailer where you pulled the entire car up on.
Backing is another thing that will cause you problems. If you have never backed up a vehicle pulling a trailer, it is pretty easy to jack-knife the trailer & not only possibly damage the U-Haul equipment, but also your own car. Just remember when you are backing up, if you want the trailer to go left, you will need to turn your steering wheel right & vice-versa.
I drove trucks professionally for 10 years, even taught students how to drive a semi during that time. The biggest problems my students had was shifting gears in a non-synchronized transmission & learning to back up. The average length of my tractor-trailer from bumper-to-bumper was approx 60 feet & the trailers were either 48 or 53 feet in length. |

You have to make wider turns than usual. You'll get a feel for it pretty quick I bet.
One thing that's good to know about pulling a trailer - if it starts getting wiggly behind you - you might be tempted to put on the brakes, but it's actually easier to control if you speed up and pull it straight before slowing down - that make sense?

Just never back up. The trickiest thing is backing up. If you get stuck in that situation find someone who can back it up for you.
Just take it slow and easy. The U-Haul trucks are easy to drive, but don't expect them to drive like your car...ESPECIALLY while towing.
Give yourself plenty of room. If you pass someone...remember that you have a car behind you. |
