Do you prefer to take back roads or the highways?

If I am traveling across country or traveling a distance in non rush hour traffic, I take the freeway.
If I am going a short distance or if its rush hour, I take back roads.
My normal commute to work is to take the freewy to work but backroads home. If I take the freeway home it is about an hour and 45 minutes but backroads its only about an hour or less.
On the freeway, going to work takes 45 minutes.

It all depends on the traffic.

When I go across the country I use freeways exclusively. Backroads when going cross country can be dangerous. You can easily end up in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Depends on if I'm in a hurry to get somewhere or not. There a lot of scenic route in Pennsylvania, West Virginia. Ohio, and Maryland. Sometime getting there is half the fun.

I prefer to take the highways/interstate. That way I can go faster and pass easily. The back roads can have too many problems, such as slow drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists. The back roads may also be curvy, hilly, and narrow.

Always take the back roads. There is more to see.

If I am traveling, I take the backroads. The real America is out there on our backroads. Interstates are made for commerce.

You should read "Blue Highways" by William Least Heat-Moon. It's one of the US's best travelogues. The people and places he saw along his long journey are amazing.

This summer I am driving the Lewis and Clark Travel from Sioux City, IA to Great Falls, MT, I will be making detours to old Indian sites along the way. I am so stoked about this trip!

I prefer the highway if I'm in a hurry to get where I have to be. Just turn on the cruise control to keep the speed within reasonable limits and go.

But I love driving (cruising) secondary highways for the scenery and the small towns and villages. During the week there is rarely any traffic on these roads.

And when I'm in the mood and in the groove there is nothing that can top a winding, freshly graded gravel road. That is really where I am in 'my element'. Nothing in the World beats sliding all four wheels though a 60 MPH corner when your travelling on gravel at 80 MPH. Better than s e x !

I love back roads. I hate traffic. I like the drive down the road without 10 cars in front of me and 10 cars behind me. Highways are boring yet they're needed. I know there are someplaces that I go that backroads would add too much travel time and waste too much gas. If travel time is somewhat close- go the back roads especially to avoid tolls

If I have a distant destination I will get on the super slab, but timing is everything; getting through major cities in the middle of the night works best for me.
When me and my knucklehead friends get on our bikes we usually only ride slightly less than 400 miles, so we get on the farm-to-market roads here in Texas and can never end up in the same place twice. we go find a hole in the wall bbq shack or a tavern and go from there..

Highways always.........much safer all-around.
