Do you put your seatbelt on before or after you begin to drive off?
Find answers to your legal question.

Do you put your seatbelt on before or after you begin to drive off?

I've seen it done both ways and was wondering which procedure was the most common.

Me
Before - since an accident can happen as soon as you pull out (it's happened to me - lucky I was wearing it!) I usually make sure the park brake is fully on and the car isn't in gear, then start the engine. Then I put it on while I wait for oil pressure to pick up, the idle speed to settle, and for the ECU's system tests to finish (which usually takes 2-3 seconds.) By the time I'm strapped in, the car's ready to go

If you accelerate, brake or turn at a rate beyond a certain threshold (the manufacturers don't tell us what that threshold actually is), the seat belts will lock up, preventing you from putting it on at that moment. That moment may just be the moment you need, so put them on first.

Do you look after you start to cross the road? This is the same thing.

Good luck!

I put my seatbelt on before I even start my truck, that way the anpoying seatbelt reminder bell doesn't go off when I start the engine.

I put mine on before I start the vehicle. It's almost an involuntary action for me. I'm a mechanic and often find myself putting on the customer's seatbelt just to pull into the shop.

I put it on before, because it's too hard to do while your're driving.

solid_zelda
I for one put it on before I even start the car...idk maybe i'm just weird or something...

I put my seatbelt on after I start my truck but before I shift it from park to reverse or drive (whichever way I'm going).

It's a habit...I would be wearing my seatbelt even if it wasn't illegal to drive without one.

Also...if I had ever been caught not wearing one while driving an ambulance, I would have been fired on the spot.

i always do it before i put car into reverse. turn car on first then i do seat belt . i then turn on air or heat . lastly, i go into reverse back out of the garage.

it's too big of a fine to pay if you are caught without a seatbelt . the statistics also show that you have a better chance at surviving an accident.

Let's think about this. Does it really matter what's most common or what's SAFER?
Safer is to put your seatbelt on before you do anything else, because otherwise your attention is split in different places. What if you're driving and the seatbelt won't clip? What if you slip it out of your hand? When you drive, your attention should really be on the road, not on your cellphone, radio, person next to you or trying to get that stubborn seatbelt to click in.

Be safe and put your seatbelt on before you drive off.

I put it on before I even put the key in the ignition. I don't even realize I'm doing it anymore i just do it as instinct one time I had to get back out and I said what the hell I didn't put that on well apparently I did. Also you should always have your seat belt on before your driving otherwise say you back out of your driveway and get rear ended your probably going to smack the dashboard since you didn't have the seat belt protecting you.

The smart driver puts it on before starting the car, unless it is the middle of winter and he has to scrape or brush the windshield before driving off.

before you move the vehicle if theres a cop sitting across the street and u pull out without it on and he notices he can ticket you and if you get hit pulling or backing out by someone not paying attention and going the speed limit it can keep you from being hurt

I put it on right when I get in. Then I start the car and go on my merry way!

I put mine on before I start the car. I do that as a force of habit. As a matter of fact, each time I get on my riding mower, I look for the seatbelt! Force of habit!

I fasten my seat belt before I turn on the ignition, just a habit.

It doesn't matter which is the most common. The correct procedure is to put the seat belt on as soon as you are seated.

I never wear my seatbelt. Why should we be forced to do something we don't want to do?
