Do you reckon they should lower the penalties for very minor speeding offences?

and by this i just mean some1 who gets flashed breaking it by 5-10mph. Im not sayin speeding is right or that those who drive well in excess or inappropiate speed for the road and conditions should b let off clean but no matter how careful and law respectful majority of us are, we'll always make the mistake of speeding by a bit and one day that being caught on a speed camera and therefore be a bit fairer on those who try best 2 stick 2 the laws of the road and everything
and ideas of penalties wd b say 1-2 points if its up2 5-10mph or up2 20-25% over the limit or something lyk that and still b harsher on those who exceed well over it (by this i wd mean ones who do lyk over 60 in a residental 30 or well over 100 on the m-ways etc)

Frankly, no , I don't. As I see it, this is already, virtually done by INCREASING the more serious violations. A few miles over the limit results in a fine. Several miles over is a more serious fine. Grossly over the limit and the penalties are even greater.
So, those drivers who casually fudge the limits, and other laws already get a break.
And, I DEFINETLY do not believe that there should be some "unwritten" law such as "no ticket for less than five miles over the limit." A speed LIMIT is called that for a reason. If five miles over were allowed, then THAT would be the limit.
What I DO like is that when someone goes to court and pleads guilty, shows remorse, and has an otherwise clean record going back several years, many judges will dismiss or reduce the charges. Such a driver is clearly not the problem to the same degree as someone who gets a ticket every year or even more often.
But the penalties that exist are supposed to discourage careless drivers and ENCOURAGE a driver to take the law more seriously. Think about it. SOME drivers can go ten, fifteen, twenty years or more without a single citation. It's not like it's impossible to obey traffic laws. |

5-10 is not bad as long as they are not being dangerous to other people like changing lanes constatnly |

I've never heard of anyone fined for doing 33mph in a 30 zone. I'd be happy with between 34- 36 just the fine no points 37-40 the current rate and points, 41 + should be 3 points but larger fine of say £150
Wouldn't hurt for them to make accurate speedometers though, in my car with sat nav on its 30 on the speedometer and 32 on the sat nav.
In my van with same sat nav its 30mph on the speedometer and 27 on the sat nav |

No. Lowering the offenses for "minor speeding" would only encourage drivers to keep speeding in general. It would just give them another reason to break the laws. The higher the fines are the less likely a driver is to make a poor decision as it relates to traffic violations. The speed limits are there for a reason. Going 5-10 mph over may be minor but it is still an offense. If you lower the fines then you would have more drivers speeding which would increase the number of accidents and drivers would increase insurance rates. Its basically a way of tempting drivers to do the opposite of what you don't want. The whole point is to keep drivers safe not cause them to speed more. If a driver gets one ounce of leeway they will continue that trend of speeding and may push the envelope more than they would if speeding fines were kept as they are or higher. |

No, i think it would be counter productive. The real point is that speeding is an attitude of mind. You are correct when you say we all go a bit over the limit, why do we, because we do not think a bit over matters and our chances of getting caught are relatively low. I am fortunate enough to have a BMW530D supplied by my employer and at 30mph you seem to be crawling along and drivers of most modern cars with their quiet engines, good suspension and sound proofing will feel the same. BUT - get 9 points on your licence and know that you are 1 flash away from disqualification and you would be surprised at just how quickly you adjust to to rigidly sticking to the limits! (I should mention that in more than 40 years of driving i have never had a ticket, but each of my 3 sons have and the eldest currently has 9 points and you can almost see the halo shining above his car as he goes through 30mph areas' at 29.5mph. lol ) |

speeding is speeding - the rules are there for a reason. You wouldn't say someone was 'very minor dead' would you? If you'd been hit by a speeding motorist, or someone you love had, you wouldn't even ask the question. (and no, I don't fall into that category thankfully - but I am a responsible motorist). At the end of the day, a car is potentially as much a killing machine as a gun - you can't 'bend the rules' because someone gets a bit of lead-boot, or because someone gets a bit trigger happy. Responsibility and accountability for our own actions - end of |

They have mooted messing with the limits and speeds clocked over but I just wish they would pour as much effort into better driving. You can still be a complete numpty within the law but the current set up is geared for those that break that limit. It takes real policing to catch the majority of causes of accidents. That is, most of the accidents that are not caused by speed. |

Don't you think if the penalties were lower people would speed more? You were probably in an area where they are really trying to minimize speeding. Every cop has their own discretion. Even though you were only going 5-10 miles over, you were still over. It isn't anyones fault but yours. |
