Do you recommend driving with only 2 snow tires?

I don't want to invest much for 4 tires if I could do it with only 2.

That depends. If you have rear-wheel drive car, yes it's fine. On the other hand, if your car is front wheel-drive, it is actually illegal to have only two snow tires (studded) unless you put them in the back, where they become completely useless. The reason 4 studded tires are needed on FWD autos is because of tail whip. Say you are going down an icy hill, have 2 studs on the front of a FWD, and need to stop immediately. If you step on the brakes the rear of the car could actually slide out from under you due to poor traction in the rear and good traction in the front. It's very dangerous, plus if you get stopped by a cop and he sees only 2 studs on the front of a FWD vehicle, you will get ticketed and your car might get towed |

All weather tires work great unless you live in the snow belt. Two snow tires work fine when they are put on the front for front wheel drive and in the back if it is rear wheel drive. When spring comes take them off and put back on the other all weather tires. Time it so that when you get new all weather tires you do it in early winter so you have the best tread for winter. Depending on the number of miles driven you should get a number of years from your tires, only having to purchase two tires at a time because of the tire rotation and change out. Don't put the snow tires on to early and you will get longer life from them. Also get them off early in the spring/end of winter for the same reason. |

That depends- is the car RWD, FWD, AWD or 4WD? If it is RWD- it's fine. The Black Crown Vic in my Avatar photo only has 2 winter tread & goes perfectly fine in the snow, but a FWD, AWD or 4WD can cause you problems if the tires on the axles are mismatched in tread types & it is not recommended to use only 2 winter tires. |

the drive axel is basically all you need- 4 would be good- but 2 works |

Used to be that two were considered fine but the safety gurus have since determined that snow tires all round is better. I agree with them. Especially on FWD, AWD and 4x4's. 2 snows on RWD drive is acceptable but I prefer 4 proper snows on any vehicle regardless of it's configuration.
In one Province (Quebec) of Canada snow tires are mandatory effective Jan. 01 this year. And you must have 4 of them. |

No. I do not recommend driving with two. Driving itself is easy. Snow tread is needed on all four tires for grip to turn and stop. |

I would go with four tires for overall better handling but if you go with only two then make sure that you put them on the rear of the vehicle...not the front.
