It is a known fact that driving while holding on and chatting on a cell phone is as bad as driving drunk, but unlike drunk you can hang the phone up. In car hands free phones are fine as it lets your hands free to operate it much safer. In most places nowadays its illegal to use a hand held cell phones when driving. Every car wreck the police check for cell phone use and if there is one they will be found at fault in most cases, as it fall into the driving with undue care and attention. Cell phones use in a car is not necessary at all, we all drove for 75 years with out them, just fine.

Driving while you are on a cell phone is quite dangerous. Too many people try to do this and have accidents. I have witnessed many people weaving in and out of lanes and failing to maintain a safe speed because they are on their cellphones. I saw a young woman who appeared to be text messaging who completely ran off the road and into a field. I can't imagine why any phone call would be so necessary that you would risk having an accident.

Driving while using a cell phone is dangerous. It is also downright stupid. Everyone knows that cell phone users get easily distracted while driving.

With cellular phone popularity reaching new heights (over 80 million phones in use in the US), more and more drivers are using their commute time to conduct business and personal affairs on their cell phones.

It's a great way to make use of the time, but there is a dark side: Dialing, discussing and doing deals all affect your ability to properly respond to typical road hazards -- let alone challenging driving situations.

Definately dangerous if you do not pay close attention. The best thing to do would be to use a wireless device either on your person or attached to the dashboard. Of couse, it is always safer to pull over to the side of the road and place your calls, or just wait until you are at your destination.

I won't deny that it's dangerous, but I don't see how it's all that different than having a conversation with someone in the passenger seat, especially if you have the hands free type of phone. They can be distracting especially if you're trying to dial, but look at all the dozens of other distractions. You can't ban every kind of distraction. What about people who are just daydreaming or something?

I find there are times when it is neccessary for example if I my car is acting up and I need to call someone while I try to find a place to park off the highway. However just to have a chat with a friend it is not neccessary but I will admit I'm guilty of doing it on occasion. I read an article(cant remeber source) that said a 17 yr old driving and talking on a cell phone has the same reaction time as the average 70 yr old. I can't count the number of times in one day I am in near collisions with people on cell phones.

I wouldn't outright say it is dangerous, sometimes it is necessary to drive and use the phone at the same time. If, and only if, the option is available to safely go onto the shoulder or give the phone to a passenger, that is what you should do. If going onto the shoulder is not an option, then I would say, yes, it is acceptable to use your cellphone while driving.

I don't think driving on a cell phone is any more dangerous than talking to the person in the passenger seat next to you, especially if you have a hands free phone.
