Do you think mobile phones should be banned in all vehicles?

I think most people have used their mobile phones when driving at one time or another, I have done it and I nearly piled into an oncoming car, it really is one of the most frightening bad driving habits today, I dread to think what could have happened had I crashed into that car, not just to me but to the people in the other car.

The thing is its just too dammed easy to do, people in general don't think their doing anything wrong, I have seen cars swerving all over the road for no apparent reason, you think to yourself, " what the hell is wrong with him/her" and guess what, they were on the phone.

Unless someone comes up with a better way of controlling this, then the only way is to treat the offenders the same way you would treat a drunk driver, possibly even worse.

My brother died because he lost control of his car because he was talking on a mobile phone, there was no drugs or alcohol involved, just the dam phone

this doesn't even need any support except vehicles are actually big metal machines of death, if you cannot concerntrate on the road it just means you may not be aware that you just killed someone untill you hang up!

When the car is moving yes .. you shouldn't be on your phone.. I always am stopped when I talk on the phone in the car...

Cell phones should not be banned; however, the should NOT be alloweed while they are driving. I belive that they should be fined like $500.00 for talking on the cell phoine while driving. That way they will not do it again. (Hopefully)

No, but using them while driving should be illegal. In some parts of Europe, the UK for example, driving while using a cell phone is illegal. Your full attention needs to go on your driving, and not split with listening and talking to someone at the same time.

Here in the states I see a lot of people talking on their cell phones while driving, and it is dangerous. People need a phone in the car for emergencies, but if they want to use a phone they should pull over somewhere first then make there call.

In reallity you can't ban cell phone use in motor vehicles. If you tried you would probably have to change you address, Identity, SSN, and gender or else you will have angry mobs of people trying to hunt you down and kill you...But seriously I think that people shouldn't talk and drive. It's pretty dangerous. But honestly I can't endorse a ban because I too am guilty of driving while I talk/text. I have yet to get in an accident though! =)

Why does every good idea have to be legislated? In the interest of freedom, wouldn't a hands free device in every car be a much more practical solution?

Yes, I fully agree that mobile phones should be banned to all
drivers while driving their vehicles on the road. There are far too
many accidents on the road involving drivers with their hand-held
phones. They are a menace as far as safe driving is concerned,
because they usually distract drivers to cause unnecessary
accidents to happen.
Should any driver be caught by the police or traffic authorities
using hand-held phones while driving on the road, a heavy penalty or even a jail sentence (not more than 6 months) should be imposed on that person.
It will really deter any one from using it while driving!

No. Lets look at the good mobile phones can do. There is a feature called *77. You can call this number when you are being pulled over by a unmarked car. You can ask the operator if this is a valid police officer and if not they will dispatch a bunch of police at a moments notice. Also, if you are out of minutes and you have a medical emergency, you can still Dial 911. If you are a victim of a hit and run, you can pull out the phone and call the police and give them their license number.

Cell phones are like drugs. Drugs in themselves aren't bad, its when they are mishandled and abused that they become dangerous. Cell phones are the same way, good when used properly, a problem when used haphazardly.

I don't think banning use of mobile phones in vehicles is the answer..Making sure that you use hands free devices and or speaker phone is a better solution. Most accidents happen when people aren't paying attention whether talking on the phone, looking down to change the channel or CD on the radio, eating, doing makeup, changing inside the car, taking care of the crying baby in the back seat. I fully agree that they should have hands free devices in every car or hell now days you can have a phone built into your car and buy minutes for it. It is a proven fact that having a cell up to your ear when driving affects you like you were drunk. With a hands free device it is just like talking to a passenger.

No. People can get distracted by eating or changing the radio station, and we are not going to ban those.

first of all, if the goverment inforced this kind of law, people would still carry there phones on them in there vehicle, and would be tempted to use it to much, i think that all cars should come with a built in hands free set up for phones, and older cars should have one installed. they don't cost to much. and there hella usefull.

Ya we need more laws. also ban tuning the radio, talking to passengers, blinking.
If you cause a accident and your phone is to blame you would get an inattentive driving ticket at least. Point is there are laws that are older than the existence of cell phones dealing with the root of this issue. BTW are you implying that before cell phones there was no accidents?

no, banning is not the answer. there needs to be some kind of test, though. like if a person can chew gum and walk, they can drive with a cell phone. if they can't, then they can't drive with one.

Fair enough on hand held use, but hands free use is not dissimilar to talking to a passenger in the vehicle. We should also ban holding any discussions with passengers whilst driving. For that matter, perhaps it would be better to ban cars as this will certainly reduce the road toll.
