Do you think seat belts should be mandatory for everyone on school buses?

This question keeps coming up. No. The studies that have been done of the subject show conclusively that there are more, not less injuries when there are seat belts in school buses. That, and the extremely small percentage of injury in school buses, coupled with the cost of adding seat belts, is keep them from being mandatory, as it should.

Since there are so many kids on the bus, it's kind of a hassle to get the seatbelt on, off, etc. It should be enforced but most kids won't take the time to adjust the seatbelt, find it in the first place, or wear it.

And if the driver is injured in an accident, who will get all the kid out of the belts? Who is going to stop kids from using the belt buckles to whack other kids in the head? School bus safety is already better than pretty much every other form of ground transportation.

No. It would be great in theory but impractical to enforce, therefore, an unenforceable rule is probably a bad example.

I posed that very question to a highway patrolman a couple of years back. His answer was that school buses are actually designed to have passengers without seat belts, and even in case of a rollover they are safer not to be wearing seat belts. I asked whether restraints like they use in roller coasters would be better, to that, he had no answer. I honestly cannot see how they could be safer without them, but they are not required to have them by law, so somebody must know something that I don't.

seat belts don't always save your life..
i'm 13 and... i think that you don't need a seat belt on a bus if u sit down like you're supposed to...
BECAUSE the SEAT is our seat belts...... it stops us from flying out the window if we're seated in the seat...
but seat belts dont always save lives because you could be stuck in ur seatbelt and the bus be on fire and u need to get out then it blows up./....

Well, it got taken off because kids were strangling each other with the seatbelts...

Well, anyways, there are some bad points about it like...

1. The size wont fit, especially as most kids dont know how to tighten/loosen them
2. Most likely to get caught, and won't be able to get out - especially if nearing your stop
3. Children muck around with them - like hitting other children in the head with the buckle
4. Children 'ruin' them and they always end up breakaway - leaving the company having to pay for thousands
5. Stacks of children ride the bus, and they sometimes have to have 3 or even more kids on one seat, and it's not everyday u see more than 3 seatbelts on a 2 seater (again not leaving enough space for the rounder people)
6. The back seat is the longest, and can fit around 4 to like 10. Won't be enough room. If there were only 4 seatbelts, then there won't be enough space, and if there were ten seatbelts - well, you know.
7. School buses aren't school buses all the time, they are also public buses

Yes. You never know what type of driving records those school bus drivers have. When your sending your children off to school you assume they are safe. I always wondered about this myself...

Yes. I think it is crazy that they don't have them on school buses now. I mean when kids ride in the back seat of a car or van they have to buckle up so why not on buses. Plus it would keep them seated down which is very dangerous.
