Do you think senior citzen (65+) should be behind the wheel?

they are so slow and blind. i almost got into a car accident today.

I think they should have frequest tests, and if they fail, they lose their lisence. That way only the bad drivers won't get to drive.

TedEx
Positively amazing. Five drivers under 19 died in accidents on the highway in my county in July.
Number of dead drivers over 65---None!

Try again.

My wife's aunt drove quite well 'til she was well over 100 years old.

My Mom drives quite well at 85.

I'd prefer stupidity testing over age testing.

Some yes, some no.. but lets be fair. I have seen some younger people who should be able to drive that have no business behind the wheel of a car. So dangerous drivers come in all ages.

(Note: I'd prefer stupidity testing over age testing. I like that comment.)

They have just as much right to drive as a dumb 16 year old has, that just got his/her license.

yes
maybe your the bad driver :)

I don't think its fair to just make a blanket law that says a person automatically loses their driver's license at a particular age, but I do think it is fair that once a certain age is reached (65 is a little young), perhaps 72, that a driving test must be passed every 1-2 years to keep the license.

Duh yes! do you have something against them? without them there would be no us..?

i'm trying
Yes. As long as they pass the eye exam and they are mentally ok. I would rather ride with someone 65 than a 17 year old any day of the week. We do not treat senior citizens with the respect that they deserve. There does come a time when one's eyesite or mental capacity may need to be looked at and considered, but let families, the DMV office, and the senior citizens doctor make that call.

Don't judge the whole group by just a few. I definitely think Sr. Citizens should be driving. Most have clean records....better than a lot of younger drivers can say. I think I can safely say, you will change your point of view when YOU are 65+.

Funny Girl
Yes I do. It's not that they are slow, they just do the speed limit. There are more accidents by teens and people in there twenties than there are by "old" people.

What, you think a person should work to 65, then just die and get out of your way? If you almost got into an accident today you should damn well learn to drive. Senior citizens don't tailgate in driving rain, they don't speed in blizzards, they don't run red lights on crotch rockets, young punks do. I am 60 years old. I am a better driver than most people under 30 that have not taken performance driving courses. I have taught people how to drive. I have learned to drive in all weather conditions, and I guarantee you I could pass a driving exam in a blizzard, fog, or even in freezing rain. Why? I know my limitations from experience, and the limitations of any vehicle I have driven. If you are still alive after 42 years of driving, and have over a million miles of experience, as well as full merit discount available because of a good driving record, come see me. There is a reason more seniors receive insurance discounts than juniors.

There are many people over 65 years old that can drive fine. The young kids that think they're indestructible are the ones that bother me. The ones that are in such a big hurry and take risks on a daily basis. The people over 60 that are losing their eyesight, reflexes and judgment are certainly ones you have to keep an eye out for but at least they don't go racing around other cars not caring if they hurt someone.

Mr Quiet
Yes they should be allowed to drive however I believe they should have a mandatory medical and eye test every year and if they fail that then they are not permited to drive.

No one remembered the unfair practice of insurance companys raising the premiums of people because of their age even though they have a long clean driving record in the past. I had to give up driving because the premiums of the insurance company demanded (extorted) from me. Social security doesn't get it at all!!!

As we grow older, various parts of our body begin to wear out ... hearing, vision. There is not a magic age at which a person's age impairs driving skills.

Some people can be blind or deaf at 30 or 40.
Some people with decent optomitrist etc. assistance can be great drivers at 80 or 90.

Every time we renew our driver's license, there is an eye test, to verify it is still safe for us to be driving.

Your question is a form of agism. You are picking a magic age at which people should lose right to drive just because of age. It is very easy for DMV to conduct tests of
* vision
* hearing
* understanding

If you have ever renewed your driver's license you may have been sufficiently observant to see how they do that.

Give Blood
I'm sorry but you should not paint us all with the same brush! I have had two accidents in my life and neither were my fault. I generally drive 5 miles over the speed limit just like all the other people do around here. Yes some oldsters are slow and blind but we do not ALL fit that picture.

Are all young people careless and are they all speed demons?

The only senior citizens I think shouldn't be aloud to drive are the ones that sat behind a desk all their life. When they retire they think they can buy a 40 plus foot diesel pusher motor home with air brakes, 200 plus gallons of propane on board, and drag and Escalade around behind it. All on an operators license, waiting to have a heart attack!
