IQ test wouldn't really make much difference and you've some good responses here as to why.
A spacial awareness test, reflex test and depth perception test would be a good idea and would be more driving specific. |

IQ has nothing to do with smarts or intelligence but measures the amount a person can see outside the box compared to their age group.
A high IQ or a low IQ does not mean schooled or not schooled. |

I agree with one of the previous answers, an IQ has very little to do with safe/smart driving. My b/f has a very high IQ and has been in several avoidable accidents that were his fault. However, I don't think old people should drive unless they are tested regularly, because they can do some of the stupidest things on the road and even when I honk at them they don't realize they've done anything wrong. |

Not necessarily an IQ test but they should show some common sense. For instance, I recently learned that some people don't know that the inside lane is for passing. |

Driving is treated as a right and not a privilege. It should be a privilege that is difficult to earn and easy to loose. The Germans have the right idea when it comes to driving privileges. |

No - people should be given an IQ test before having CHILDREN. |

An IQ test , followed by proof of citizenship. |

Well i don't think your IQ has that much to do with knowing how to drive plus an IQ test has not been proven to be an accurate way to measure someone's intelligence. I do agree that some drivers out there are just plain stupid, but i'm not sure an IQ test would be the way to stop fatal road accidents. |

It's not an IQ test that is necessary, rather, a competence test. Hands-on driving experience with a well-qualified driver will help tremendously to get a new driver off on the right road (so to speak).

if they did there would be a drastic reduction in the number of drivers licenses issued. |

If they were sub-mental they would n ot get through the Driving Test. If someone gets throught the test they qualify to drive alone on the roads.
What most drivers fail to realise is that they may need to compensate for the 'errors' of other drivers and road users. That is what makes a good driver.
Remember: the elderly have slower reaction times and poorer judgement. Applies to the disabled too, whether physically or mentally. |

I think getting a license needs to be far more stringent than it is, and you should be required to show MASTERY of your vehicle, not just how to use two pedals and a steering wheel.
The German autobahn allows very high speeds, but it takes a couple thousand Euros and about a year to get licensed in Germany. They want to make sure you know what you're doing before they let you go 155mph! |

IQ has nothing to do with driving a vehicle...in some cases, IQ could actually work against a persons ability to safely drive. Don't ask me to name them, but a number of "genius" level people never had a drivers license because they couldn't master the coordination, or "motor skills" that are necessary to drive a car.
Agreed, there are quite a few people out there who should not be driving, but that has more to do with human nature than it ever will have to do with intelligence levels... |

It's not IQ that's the problem, it's that those people have too much confidence. They're too relaxed. Everyone should start trying to freak everyone else out all the time. Toss some water balloons though open windows, ladders onto freeway entrances, junk like that. Keep people on their toes! They need to learn to wake up, pay 100% attention every second on the road, obey the rules, get out of each other's way. Conscientiousness. Fear of death. Whatever you want to call it, they simply aren't taking responsibility for the contract they agreed to when they signed up to drive and passed the tests. |

I think the written drivers test and the road test is a pretty good IQ test. If you don't believe it, ask the person who takes the written test without even looking at the book. It doesn't mean they don't have a fair to good IQ but most people need to study or at least review the manual. I do believe that the manual and road test should be a little harder though. |

IQ tests do not actually test intelligence, just learning. All a person needs to drive is common sense and decent hand/eye coordination. IQ tests don't give those results. |

I just passed my test and I passed 1st time.
It's idiot drivers that think they own the road that cause the problems.
i'm getting used to a new car and my P plates are clearly displayed,
What difference does it make to you if i'm not as quick off the mark at traffic lights
Everyone begins somewhere,
Its not a case of being thick,
Its about experience and ignoring impatient prats. |

A intelligence test would prove nothing except the person might be a good candidate for a TV show, but it would be good if every driver or would be driver were to take a coarse to learn that there is more to driving than just sitting behind a wheel and trying not to hit things, like an observation course . Having a high I.Q does not mean you are automatically good at everything. |

I'd go further. As well as a minimum IQ for a driver's license I would e-introduce an IQ test with a resurrection of the old 11 Plus exam - catch the buggers early, and sterilise anyone with an IQ less than 90! |
