Do you think that seat belts will really help you in a car acedent?

I want to know what real people think.

absolutely

You'll go through the windshield otherwise

Absolutely...I got scars on my forehead from hitting the windsheild wearing a lap belt...If I had the lap/shoulder belt they have now, I wouldn't have the scars.

Yes. The seat belts apply restrain on your shoulder to stop you from flinging about in the car when a car accident should happen.

(Better a dislocated shoulder then having your body broken.)

Why else would there be seat belts?

I mean, I guess it could depend on how severe the accident is, but why would you risk not wearing your seatbelt?

For every person trapped by their seat belt in a car after an accident, many more are thrown from vehicles and killed when they literally fly into the ground. When your car collides with an object and you are not strapped in, you become a victim of the "second collision". This means that your car goes from 60 to zero in a split second. However, your body is still rocketing forward at 60mph. Get into a head-on and that speed doubles. That means that whatever your body hits, it will hit it at 120MPH., and that will usually be head-first. Your face will become a grindhouse of metal, glass, and asphalt.

Yes, we have airbags, but just like in commercial aviation, every safety system has a backup. At the very least, your seatbelt is YOUR backup in case of faulty airbag deployment.
Besides, what if your car rolls? Even with an airbag, you'll be thrown all over the inside of your vehicle, colliding multiple times with your car's interior.

Maybe I saw enough scary movies in Drivers' Ed, but I always use a seatbelt, even though I break other driving laws on occasion...even when I'm just backing out of my driveway and not going anywhere. It's just a habit and like most habits I don't even think about it so it is easy and automatic. Besides, cars are expensive and seat belts are part of that. You paid for it, you'd might as well use it!

For the most part they will help you But the reason I can write this is because I wasn't wearing a seatbelt .If I was wearing a seatbelt when a friend of mine rolled a pick-up at high speed ,I would be 36 years in the ground already.

There was an accident two days ago in Orlando, FL where a van load of kids and the driver were thrown all over the interstate because none of them had a seatbelt on. The mother of one of them (who was not the driver) was the only one who was not ejected and she was wearing a seatbelt. The accident was caused by a blown tire. While there are some rare accidents where it was bad to have a seatbelt on, they protect you in most accidents. After some of the damage to peoples faces I have seen from not having one on, I always wear one now.

I think it does. alot of lives are saved using seatbelts people are just to lazy to put it on. Knowing they will either get into an accident or pay a big fine for not having them on!!

Absolutely. Ask a mortician.

Yes I do. Watched simulations on TV and read studies. I do think they provide an additional level of safety to the motorists.

Properly fastened and fitted seat belts, combined with passive restraint systems (air bags) are probably the biggest positive improvements in automotive safety since hydraulic brakes. I am a firm believer in seat belts and won't even start my vehicle until all passengers are belted in. Having had two accidents in forty years of driving, I know the difference between being belted in and not belted. My first accident was in the mid-1960's when seat belts were optional and I went flying around the passenger compartment of my Corvair like a bullet; I was bruised from head to toe.

My second accident in 2001 was the fault of a cat that ran in front of my wife's Buick; fortunately, when I hit the pole, the airbags deployed and the seat belts prevented any other injuries. I shudder to think of how my passenger and I would have fared had the belts and airbags not been available (we would both have gone straight through the windshield).

48 years of experience says that seat belts save lives. End of story.

Yes, I do. I was involved in a rollover collison and without my seatbelt, I wouldn't be here to be typing to you. I would have flown through the window and been squashed by the Blazer. The seatbelt saved my life and I am constantly reminding myself and my son of that.

No Lies
There are literally thousand of studies that substantiate the fact that wearing a seat belt is beneficial during an accident.
A seat belt has also saved me from personal injury in an accident.

Princesita
It will help more than not.

Yes,it happens to me and get lucky.

I was in a bad accident in 1995. My neck was broken in 3 places, but I survived. If I had not been belted in, I would have flown out the window at 100 km/hr, been splattered all over the truck I hit, and dribbled all over the road.

If u have belted yourselves it would help u , otherwise it would not.

I know for a fact that they will. Three times over!

The most horrific accident I ever saw was one that I was involved in about 17 years ago in TX. I was driving along a rural Farm Road at 55 MPH. A pickup coming in the opposite direction suddenly swerved to avoid a dog that had run into the road. The driver of the pickup wasn't wearing his seat belt and slid over to the passenger side, completely losing control of his truck.

His truck came across the road and struck me at about a 30 degree angle, head on. This forced my car off towards the right side of the road and caused me to roll 5 or 6 times. The impact was so severe that most of the front of my car was torn away, the engine and transmission assembly landed nearly 100 yards from the car.

I was knocked unconscious briefly. When I came to, my car was upright -- sort of. I had bruises all over, numerous minor cuts and scratches from flying glass, and a broken collar bone. Looking at the destruction all around, the pain from that broken collar bone was the sweetest sensation of my life as it told me that I was ALIVE!

It took me a few seconds to get my wits about me but I released the seat belt and crawled from the wreckage of my car. As I looked around I couldn't believe that I had survived. My car was barely recognizable as a car, it was little more than a pile of rubble.

Looking back up the road, the road and shoulder were covered with pieces of what had once been a Chevy pickup. I only knew what it had been from that flashback image in my mind just prior to the impact. The truck had spun off the opposite side of the road and impacted a boulder on the side of the road and had tumbled who knows how many times. About 50 yards beyond the boulder was a pile of meat that must have been the driver of the truck. It was barely recognizable as human; only the blood-soaked remnants of clothing gave that much of a clue. Obviously he had been thrown from the truck which then rolled over him as it continued on its path of total obliteration.

It took about 15 minutes for the police to arrive on the scene. When they saw what was left of my car, they started looking for another body and were somewhat shocked to see that I had survived and had walked away from the scene. They thought that I was an onlooker from one of the several vehicles that had stopped at the scene despite the scratches on my face and some blood from a cut on my scalp.

The driver of the truck left a wife and 4 children behind. Of course, he had no life insurance. The last I'd heard, his wife and kids were on welfare as she had no marketable skills and had depended upon him totally for her support. In the accident investigation that followed, she revealed that he never wore a seatbelt. He felt that they were for sissies and it was his God-given right to drive without one.

fideux
Yes they do. Or, if you prefer, you could let the windshield stop you. Almost as effective, without those nasty seat belt burn marks.

bambinos757
yes it does. If you are driving at 50 mph and you hit something, your car will stop. The car will stop but all that is loose in the car will still travel at 50 mph. The seatbelt will absorb the energy of you going at 50 mph to bring you to 0. The concept is all in the absorbtion of the energy. If you drop to 0 too fast, it is dangerous for your internal organs because of the energy.

Of course, if you dont have a seatbelt, you will go through the windshield or the side window depending on how you are hit.

yes, unless you want your body outside the car with a cracked head.

I have two different things that happened to people I know. In one if he had a seat belt on he would not have made it because of the way the truck was hit and in the other if she did not have it on she would not be with us today.Studies show that more lives are saved than not by wearing the seat belt and it is the law so ..... click it or ticket
