Find answers to your legal question.

Do you think that the speed limit should be increased in the UK, depending on the road?

I think that the speed limit on roads in the UK should be changed to suit the road, rather than the road type. So that unsafe roads have a lower speed limit (60mph) and safe roads have a higher speed limit(80mph).
If you agree please sign my petition to the PM at: http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/Road-assesment/

Its perfectly simple. Each road is assesed on their own. If they are found to be unsafe, the limit is dropped. If they are found to be safe roads, the limit is raised.

Raising the speed limit on any roads to 80mph would be a mistake. People generally do 80-85mph on M-ways anyway, and so long as you're not driving like a plonker, Plod will ignore it.
If they raised the limit to 80, they'd feel the need to be seen to be ENFORCING the new limit, so more people would be booked, more fines raised, more of our hard-earned would go to the government who would think of even more ways to f*ck with us!

Not only should there be higher speed limits BUT certain vehicles should have lower speed limits such as three wheel Reliants and many older cars with poor brakes and road holding and above all WHITE VANS. Put a plate on the back with the limit on it

There should be no national speed limit anywhere. The speed limit should always be set according to what is a safe speed on any particular stretch of road. Also on how fast the majority (85%) of drivers actually drive That is the safest way.

Blanket speed limits exist only to make money for the government in the way of collecting fines. So don't expect it to be easy to rise that limit. Because it would cut off that source of revenue to the Government.

Roads are not unsafe: have you ever seen an accident occur on a road empty of traffic ? ? ? It`s the drivers who use the roads that make them unsafe. Your petition would be more use if it were to request that drivers be re-tested every 5 years.

Provided there was adequate signage I wouldn't have a problem with that. I'd go one step further and have variable speed limits in certain places. For example 20mph zones around some schools - okay during the day when children are around but, if it's an open straight road, why at night? The M25 has variable signs, use them elsewhere.
And as for young/new drivers.... there should be similar restrictions to motorcycles, e.g. first 2 years after passing test restricted to 1100cc engine or something similar.

In general I agree with the idea - but don't expect to get the result you want.

The safety assessment would not be on the basis of the average driver - but on poor or worst cases. In a couple of areas near me there are two roads where the limits have been reduced from 60 to 50 as a result of a number of accidents. It is expected that this will save lives, but that better, law abiding, drivers will have slower, and more frustrating journeys. In other words, the authorities will be cautious (what else could they be) in their evaluations.

A different approach is to find ways of identifying bad driving, not just fast driving. Unfortunately this is a bit of a "Holy Grail" - almost impossible to pin down without the aid of "black-boxes" for cars. Do you want that?

Motorways, Dual Carriageways, yes, housing estates and provincial town centres possibly reduced, I think the 70mph limit should be brought back on A roads except built up areas and 80 on motorways

As for speed cameras, I drive about 450miles a week, yes I have over the years been caught for speeding, (never by a camera) but, I don't agree with someone else reply that says think they just make money for local authorities, if you don't break the law, they don't make any money. If you live in an area you know where the cameras are then you should have more sense, if not local or a visitor you should be driving a little more carefully. These static cameras are preceded by warning signs, painted bright dayglo yellow, not hidden, and most listed on the internet, in my area the mobile locations are published every week in a paper, you can get a leaflet from the Local Auth and broadcast on local radio - what more more do you want

And I don't hang about driving either, but there is a time and a place, perhaps limits should go by time of day

Perhaps a slow speed fine for certain drivers should be introduced

Why is it that young males, who pose such a risk on the roads and have to pay massive insurance premiums as a result, want higher speeds to be permitted? Judging by the number that manage to leave the road without help around here there should be a max 50 mph limit for under 30's. Who will be the ones that give this a thumbs down on grounds other than logic.

This would result in speed limits changing all the time. If a speed limit is raised, then people will drive faster and there will be more accidents, as it is lowered it will become safer and so it will then be increased- causing more accidents. There is ABSOLUTELY no reason to speed on the road. Road speed limits are based on the general ability to manoeuvre on the road (take corners etc...) so increasing speed limits in answer to an increase in 'safe driving' would, well it would cause more accidents. I suggest you stop wasting innocent lives and slow down on all roads. Also stop putting stupid petitions in front of the prime minister - he already thinks he is in charge of a nation of idiots and this sort of thing is really not helping.

You think you should drive at 60 on an unsafe road??
So you think the areas that are 30 should go up to 60? I'm not sure I understand that.
