I think you should just remove all speed limits.

The careful drivers will use their common sense while the idiots will still be idiots.

As has already been pointed out, local speed limits are under constant review. The motorway speed limit of 70 m.p.h. was introduced in 1965 and has remained so ever since. If you`re a regular motorway driver, you`ll be aware that the effective speed limit is around 80 m.p.h. Should it be increased to 80, the effective limit would be 90, and so on. Whilst there have been numerous improvements in the design of cars, which has undoubtedly made them much safer, there has not been the same improvement in the standard of driving. Don`t forget that 95% of "accidents" are caused by driver error, which is just a euphemism for plain stupidity. I would suggest that driver education is a much more pressing issue than that of speed limits. Just as an aside, it is a speed LIMIT, not a speed TARGET which must be adhered to at all costs, and your licence is just that: a licence to drive, it`s not a right to drive. Right, thanks, I`ll get off my soapbox now !

what do you mean they are always being reviewed and changed infact the other day i went to get some petrol and 2 men where switching the 40mph signs to 30mhp signs you really thought that they just left them and never reviewed such a thing!?

Yes, I think the speed limit on the motorway should be increased to at least 75mph, preferably 80mph provided driving conditions are clear & dry. It's dangerous trying to stick to a 70mph speed limit on a busy motorway. I think the other speed limits are ok.

I think the motorway speed limit should go up to 90 or 100. To 70 on dual carriageways but still 60 on class A and B roads. Built up areas down to 20 and 10 near/around schools and hospitals.

The seventy MPH speed limit has been around for about fifty years now, when it was introduced cars had poor handling poor braking, most cars did not have power steering and the steering then does not compare to todays cars, so all in all I would say that an increase should be introduced because modern cars are so much easier to handle and drive, they are also constructed better and can with stand an accident better keeping the occupants safer with the use of seat belts and airbags.

I think the motorway speed limit could be increased to 85 or 90mph in good conditions, but they should leave other limits unchanged, they should also revise stopping distances considering they're based on a Ford Anglia.

the carnage on our roads is a disgrace.`some of the smaller cars disintigrate with horrendous consequences.top gear highlights certain models which should not be on our roads. the thing that gets me is all of these speed bumps .ive witnessed people who swerve them i wonder how many accidents have arisen due to this bad practice?.as for speed limits i think they should remain the same.

motorway speed limit was apparently brought in to conserve fuel
i think out of town sections could be set at 100 after rush hour and only during daylight hours . urban areas can stay the same
as they can slow you down with speed bumps if needed
