Do you think this would be a good idea?

Hi, I'm trying to do a little market research for a psychology of motivation class I am taking. We have to come up with a product, a market campaign, and find out if our product is something people would be interested in.
One of the products we are considering is something to address the problem of children accidentally being left in the back seats of vehicles. This would be a simple sensor located in each of the back seat belts that would cause an alarm to go off(much like the one that reminds you to buckle your seat belt when you start your car or to turn your lights off when you're getting out of the car) when the driver's car door is opened and there is a back seat belt engaged. This alarm would stop once the door was closed or the belt was unbuckled.
Ok, now for a little of the statistics.. A total of 404 children have died in the last 10 years as a result of hyperthermia (overheating) resulting from being left in the back seat of a car. A little over half of these children's deaths were a result of their being forgotten and being accidentally left in the back seat.
Now, I need a simple yes or no answer, do you think a sensor built into the seat belts in the back seats of vehicles would be a good idea to remind parents and other adults to get the children out of the back seat?
Thanks!

no. more gadgets to take the place of our brains only cause our brains to slow down more and some have already stopped< |

This is not a yes or no answer. but I think if you were to sterilize stupid people, this would solve not only this, but many other problems. |

It sounds like it'd be a good gadget, but I'd rather not see more buzzers or voices or electronics, no matter how helpful, in cars. |

how about, instead of a buzzer, a hammer that hits the driver in the head. A big hammer! to get their attention. How does someone "forget" their kids are in the car? It a good idea. but i dont think any warning would curb stupidity.
I wonder how many toddlers unhook their child seat clasp. Maybe a warning device, even radio controlled or an annoying buzzer, that would warn the driver if that happenned?? Could make it to retofit a child seat that a parent already bought. and make it standard on new production models. Just a thought. |

Great idea. However, we have so many buzzer/chimes in the cars now, you tend to ignore them. Better choice would be a voice chip that would actually tell you, "Remove infant in car seat" in an authorative female voice. Hope this helps. |

I think it would be a great idea if it was so loud that other passerby can hear and get the police to rescue the child and arrest the negligent person behind the wheel. Many of these kids are let behind on purpose so the driver can go drink or shopping! It should yell, CHILD LEFT IN VEHICLE! GET HELP! |

No.
The problem I have with this is that it does not really address the problem.
I assume parents do not simply forget their children are in the back seats of cars the same way they would with a bag or a coat. Kids make noise and fidget so I don't think parents forget they are there.
What I think normally happens is that the parents leave their children in the car, go off to do some shopping or a task and loose track of time or forget that they left the child in the car and to come back and check up on them. In that case an alarm would be useless as the parent is no where near the vehicle.
Given the amount of attention car alarms get from the general public, it would not necessarily alert passer-by's either (no more so than the kids moving around in the car would anyway).
I know these deaths are a tragedy, but I honestly do not believe a buzzer would work to reduce them since any parent that would leave their child in the back of a car would still do so if there was a buzzer to remind them. |
