Do you think we should raise the legal driving age to 18?

what should be done is more thorough training instead of just saying.....no nothing until 18. that will just wind up causing the rookie 18 yr olds to be just as lethal as a 16 yr old wise-azz thinkin they can continue to fly on snowy roads.

what should be done, and i'd be all for this: able to get the permit at 15, and they must have at least 1 complete year; from the date the permit is validated, before u can even schedule a test for the license. especially in the northern states. they need at least 1 full season in the 'arts' of driving in: freezing rain, snow covered roads, in snow squalls both in the day and at night. they need to learn how to recognize within a couple of minutes if the road is particularly evil in being able to maintain total control. they need to learn how to handle a skid, get out of the skid, and not get into 1 to begin with.
they need to learn how to drive in heavy traffic and not kill themselves by cutting off a truck, blowing a red light, or kill a biker by not checking blind spots and actually looking for the bike.

cell phone use by cagers: enforce it 100% illegal while moving, and it should be considered a primary offense...they'll tag u on sight.

excessive speeding....like morons on rice rockets reving up to triple digit speeds, or idiots in sport/souped up cars going at least 15 mph over the limit........6 months license suspension first offense. its a clear-cut choice to go 15+ mph over the limit just like drinking and then driving.

if teens want to drive, then they should seriously EARN that privlege.....and revoke their license if they get just 1 major ticket between permit and 18 until age 18. screw up on the road, and u could easily kill some1. cant handle that, stay off the road.

Well lets see, you probably have a license already or you wouldn't have asked that question...............

Yes I do.

I'm 17 and I'm a very responsible driver, what I'm SICK of is the stupid chavs vrooming around in their nicked sports cars completely disregarding the Highway Code or other drivers.

Raising the age wouldn't make a difference if it was only by one year though.

No. I think at any age starting out driving one could be reckless. Sure it's a bit worse when the person is so young, but it helps get a lot of practice in. And at such an age where you've been relying on your parents, probably, to take you to school.. they probably have to go to work or have better things to waste their gas on so they get their own way to school and learn responsibility sooner in life (hopefully).

Player
I don't I think it should be 21, kids are reckless and ignorant on the roads.

I think that it would be a good idea to raise the driving age - perhaps even beyond 18. I also think that there should be more rules associated with driving with passengers (not between particular hours like is Oz). In addition, not just younger drivers, but I do think that we should test more often to make sure that people stay competent as they get older.

Where I work we are trained and tested each year on our driving as a HSE requirement for staff. It's seen as a benefit by employees and definitely keeps your driving skills up.

I don't think so. I think that raising the legal driving age to 18 would actually result in more accidents. It doesn't matter what age you start out driving, the inexperience behind the wheel is what results in a higher percentage of accidents. Getting a drivers license at the age of 16 allows a person to get 2 years of experience under their belt before driving becomes a necessity to make a living instead of just a privilege. I believe that it is around 30-40% of people don't go to college after graduation, that means that you will have thousands of new drivers all across the country that are joining the morning and afternoon commute on their way to their new jobs.

Think about it this way. When you go to work in the morning and come home in the afternoon, would you rather be driving in front of a person with 2 years of driving experience that has an idea of what they are doing, or somebody that just got their license and is too nervous behind the wheel to remember which pedal is the brake when traffic suddenly comes to a complete stop right in front of you?

Yes, eighteen at a bare minimum and then only after a rigid driving test , perhaps in a simulated trainer.

i do, maybe even 21..we have to many kids driving around..that are not responsible

smartsassysabrina
No, not at all. I think we need to make the driving age more flexible, and possibly allow younger teens to drive, if they prove themselves responsible. I think we've long made the mistake that age=maturity when it does not.

no i dont think so. people cant drive 16 18 30 40 60 there is bad drivers in all age groups. i find that most bad drivers are 30 and up.

russ.gower@btinternet.com
One year isn't going to make much difference in regards to young drivers being stupid etc. Remember school leaving age is 16 for some people, up to a year relying on public transport is very difficult when you want to start work and live in a rural location.

Actually yes. In the Chicagoland area, teenage drivers are causing more accidents than people talking on cell phones. They don't pay attention, have too many friends in the car and therefore, more distractions. They also play the music so loud that the rear quarter panels shake with each beat. They also don't use common sense.

Shemp
Yes I do. The fact is that most fatal accidents happen to teens 16-20. Shoot I remeber when I was 16, I should have never gotten mine. I was not mature enough to handle it.

Yup even 21
It would stop accidents

I think that a 16 year old should be able to get a license. At 16 they are still under some parental control. At 18 they are adults, (other than the drinking age which I think is a violation of the Equal Protection clause of the Constitution, but that is another subject) and there is no control factor involved!

At 16 people can not own a car, so their parents have control of when and (mostly) where they drive. I know that when I was 16, I knew that if I got one ticket, or my parent saw me driving unsafely, I would not be allowed to drive! This fear was a control factor!

When I was 18, I bought my own car! By then, the good driving habits were set somewhat! If I had gotten my license and car at the same time, I most likely would have been more aggressive in my driving, not being in fear that I would lose the car if I got a ticket.

Parents need to be parents! They need to be sure that their teen is mature enough to drive, and is skilled enough to handle the vehicle! If you raise the driving age to 18, you take away that influence!

The problem with 16 year olds driving is they lack experience! If you raise the driving age to 18 (or 30) you will still have drivers on the road who are lacking experience! They just will be older!

Should be the same as unlimited motorcycles - 21

Should be 21,

crashtheblues
In Singapore, the legal driving age is 18. However, I feel that the legal driving age should be 21 and above as you don't really need a car to get around that much when you're 18. Furthermore, the older, the better, as you tend to be more cautious of your surroundings and safety.

NO! Not at all I'm tired of driving my teen around.

oklatom
No. Most of the states have addressed the problems by implementing the graduated license regulations, and not giving full privileges until age 18.

good directions
No way. Everyone should get to experience there first date when they finally turn 16. I do like the not more than 2 teens at a time without an adult in the car though. Stupid things just seem to happen in groups when you are young.

jed slade
No,i think the 16 to 18 age group should apply to be trained on test tracks, and taught to drive properly by proffessionals, not their dads or sisters etc.

JC
any age other than 18, only because they start drinking at tht age too and so i could imagine there would be a lot more drink driving!
