A friend was just in an accident and the airbag did not deploy. There is a snow plow on the front of the vehicle and I wonder if the snow plow prevented the impact sensors from detecting sufficient force to deploy the airbags. The driver of the other vehicle acknowledged that he was going about 60 MPH.
If you have experience or expertise in this area, please include this in your answer.

It appears that different cars use different types of crash sensors. This might also factor into it.

If I read this correctly, your friend had a snowplow installed infront of his vehicle? If so, then this affects any sensors that are built into the front bumper.
I witnessed an accident in which a Mercedes SUV with a pushbar crashed through a concrete planter, and into the front of a convenience store. Despite the damage, the airbag of the Mercedes did not deploy. Our only conclusion was that the impact was transferred directly to the frame, bypassing the bumper.
A snowplow, attached to the vehicle's frame would have the same effect. Just my guess. |

Drives me crazy to hear about people driving that fast in inclement weather!
The dynamics in such a crash with the snowplow could
change deacceleration enough to not deploy the sensors. Also, do a computer scan of the ECM and make sure it did not log an error code before the crash. Most ECMs will not let an airbag deploy if it senses there is problem with it.
Do you know if the mounting system for the snowplow was a hard bolt system or a soft system designed to soften the jolts that a snow plow normally encounters?
I did not find anything relevant, but this snow plow manufacturer specifically mentions air bags. For the opposite reason strangely enough. Somehow a snowplow IS capable of affecting the operation of an Air Bag.

yes since the car was designed to crash in a certain way to deploy the airbag. since there was a snow plow, it might of impeded the airbag sensors to detect the crash. SO if the actual crash is around 60 MPH the snow plow might of absorbed all of the energy, that's why the airbags sensor didn't see why it needed to deploy. |

That is possible, the sensor is on the front and the snow might have piled up in there and maybe froze the sensor or if the car was new enough he may had a faulty air bag. |
