Does an almost 3yr old need a car seat on a plane?

2yr 10 month old going on 3 hour flight to spain... will he need a car seat or is the seat-belt okay? He has his own seat booked already... & will hopefully get window seat... but does he really need a car seat?
Thanks in advance! :]

As you know... He's too old to be a 'lap baby'... and honestly for safety I would never do that anyway. Children have been injured and even killed in survivable emergency landings and turbulence when thrown from their parent's lap. Young children would certainly be better off in a carseat on the plane.

But as to *how* to restrain an older preschooler in his own seat.... I would still bring the carseat. He'll be more comfortable in a seat he is familiar with... it will reenforce the idea that we *always* use a carseat... and it will restrain him more safely if there *is* a situation that tosses the plane about roughly. I personally wouldn't consider using the seat belt alone unless the child was at least 40 pounds... and most children under three will not even be *close* to that weight yet.

Here is a great general webpage on young children and air travel that discusses some of these questions: http://www.cpsafety.com/articles/airplanetravel.aspx

Hope that helps!

I wouldn't have thought so. I went to spain when my daughter was 10mths and we didn't need a car seat. Unless you are paying for a seat for your child they will have to sit on your lap for the duration of the flight.

Apart from the obvious - restraining your child in the event of an accident - a car seat is mostly needed to restrain your child under hard braking and when going fast around corners and roundabouts.

There is no hard braking or cornering involved in flying and in the extremely unlikely event (you are safer in a commercial aircraft than you are crossing a road statistically) of an accident you are all going to be dead anyway.

I personally have never seen a child's car seat in use in an aircraft. But then i don't fly that often.
