Does any one know that front fog lamps can only be used in rain fog or snow and then instead of headlights?

as stated in section 6 of the construction and use manual which is a statement of law. There is no mention of any degree of vizabilaty i.e 50 yards - 100 yards

The laws in most areas have restrictions about driving with only auxiliary light and parking lights. That's just a heads up for you.

You can buy any aftermarket lights and install them to just turn on with a switch, with out turning on your headlights.

No, but i suspected something as two people have been fined recently in our area for the incorrect use of fog lamps. Apparently the police can pull you over if you are using them unless the weather and visibility is poor. Pity they dont also pull over the ignoramusses who drive in poor conditions without any lights!

Sounds like someone here drives with 'driving lights' on. Driving lights are auxillery lights that should go out when high beam is switched off and should only be on when high beam is switched on.
If you are not sure what your switches do have a look in your owners manual.
Driving lights and fod lights generally have a 55w bulb in them, i think some people may be confusing them with day running lights mainly from scandinavian countries which are 21w bulbs.
Fog lights shouldn't be used in rain or spray as the rear ones disguise any brake lights and dazzle and front dazzles oncoming vehicles.
Use only when visibility in fog or mist is Seriously reduced, i had some guy in front of me last week in a line of many cars all travelling at about 40 mph and every time we went through a patch of fog he put his rear fogs on, i could see cars coming in opposite direction for 1/2 mile so did he think i was going to lose him in the slight fog.
People need to think about it, if you can see a car without fog lights on in the distance and you would be able to stop without any problem at the speed you are travelling at then you don't need fog lights.

Maybe someone could tell the local chavs who drive round our area with their fog lights on all the time. They're a pain.

I wish everyone who has them knew what the law on them was or is and I wish more cops would enforce that law . I drive an 18 wheeler and mostly at night . I get blinded so many times by people running down the road with their fog lights on and there's no fog within a 100 miles . Stupid !

Yes. Although some "front fog lights" are actually driving lights and useless in the fog.

More importantly, front and rear fog lights should ONLY be used in seriously reduced visibility (fog), NEVER in rain or snow.

Even if the visibility is seriously reduced, the fog lights should still be switched off if the car is in a queue of traffic.

Front Fog Lamps can be used with, or without front headlamps (according to the law), but MUST only be used in conditions of seriously reduced visibility. The Highway Code defines this as visibility restricted to less than 100 metres.

You quote Construction & Use regulations. I'd refer you to RVLR Regs 25 & 27. It makes reference to "conditions of seriously reduced visibility" without further definition. "Rain fog or snow" is not mentioned, it is "conditions of seriously reduced visibility", which can include spray, smoke, for instance.

The standard accepted by the courts is that suggested in the Highway Code, ie. 100 yards/metres.

My biggest gripe in this regard is with those people who think they have to keep their foot on the brake pedal in queuing traffic or at lights & junctions! Why can they not use the parking ('hand') brake?
Newer cars are the worst, as a lot have lights on the rear pillars.
Why do we have to be dazzled by these, especially at night?

Second gripe is rear fog lights left on, I think this is a bigger problem than the front ones. I am dazzled by as many poorly adjusted headlights, as I am by front 'fog' lights.

Yes thats true but there are driving lights that can be used in connjunction with your head lights.

No! They don't know. Like most other things in their lives, they have no clue whatsoever. And the inability of most to have any idea of how to adjust these things down on the road where they are supposed to be, instead of in everyone else's eyes, are why they should be outlawed.

Get a clue folks, fog lamps don't make you look "kool"!!!!
