I do I do I do!
I thnk it is safer to drive barefoot than in shoes -- you feel the pedals better barefoot, and -- in the case of girls, their high heels and such have got to be HAZARDOUS to drive in.
Also, there isn't a single state in the US in which it is illegal to drive barefoot. So it's a win-win. |

I was speeding once while driving bare foot and a stupid cop pulled me over for speeding and he noticed i was bare foot and he lectured me for it. but i still drive bare foot sometimes. xoxox |

i drive barefoot as much as possible. I think its much safer than driving in flip flops and i think to me driving a 5-speed you get optimum performance.
with shoes you don't have as good a feedback from your car as driving barefoot.
thanks for asking...
edit: contrary to belief it is not illegal to drive barefoot in any state in the US... |

I always drive barefoot, yes it is the only safe way to drive for me. It nice to drive my truck barefoot when I go 4 wheeling, if you need to get out to look at something you step right in the great mud, and it goes in your toes, mmmmm |

I drove barefoot once because I had to. I was barefoot at the time that someone called and needed me to bring the pickup to him right away. I didn't have time to find my shoes. It hurt my feet to push on the pedals. And it really hurt when I got there and had to get out to help him and got a sandbur in my foot. I don't recommend it. I'd think you'd get a cramp in your foot from the pressure if you had to drive very far without shoes. Just driving in sandals hurts my feet after a while. |

I think it is totally safe to drive barefoot. Comfortability implies safety, and driving barefoot is comfortable. Also, you have more sensitivity touching pedals with your bare feet. I usually drive barefoot. |

I don't drive but I go barefoot always and everywhere, and I do know that in spite of persistent myths in the US, there are NO laws against driving barefoot in ANY state. Unfortunately, this myth is so common that even some cops believe it... but everyone who believes this please see source and stop spreading this falsity.
Some cops are convinced it's unsafe and even though they know it's not illegal may try to write you up for unsafe or reckless driving, however please see the second and third link in the source, for two sites (one from the Michigan PD, one from an Australian newspaper) making it clear that driving barefoot is no more unsafe than many types of footwear that are regularly worn and could even be considered safer than many kinds of shoes.
Of course you should also think of what you are used to; personally I haven't worn footwear for eleven years. Driving with any kind of shoe would feel like handling the steering wheel with boxing gloves, a pebble or sand bur won't faze me and I wouldn't worry about having to walk if my car breaks down. On the other extreme end I have a friend who can't walk comfortably barefoot on indoor tile, he'd probably pull back if there was even the smallest pebble, caked mud or other irregularity on the brake pedal, and he'd never be able to walk home if he didn't have shoes. Use a bit of common sense in addition to what the laws and the experts say, anything that's totally opposite from everything you're used to is likely to be a distraction and make you clumsy with your feet. |

I don't consider it safe. Too much chance of having some sharp little thingie stick to your foot, and then stepping on the brake pedal (especially in an emergency situation), only to experience an unexpected and excruciating pain that causes you to instinctively lift up your foot. Bam, there goes the minivan filled with nuns.
Not a good idea, and not to be a "square" or anything, probably illegal too.
Edit: Always happy to admit when I'm wrong (fortunately it doesn't happen very often) :^P
Evidently it's permitted in just about every US state with the possible exception of Kentucky. I really don't think it should be; and to the person who thinks it's safer, that's pretty hard to believe. I bet the vast majority of professional drivers wear shoes. |
