good point, as i would only take 1 little shunt to severely injure the cyclist or 1 drink driver so from safety point of view yes, there are more and more cycle lanes appearing now on the roads in the uk |

Absolutely not!!
Don't be a road hog, share the road with cyclists and joggers and pedestrians and we'll all get along much better. Besides, of the four categories mentioned, YOU'RE the one who's spewing poisonous gases out of your tailpipe, so behave yourself, OK?
Good luck!... ☺ |

no sidewalks are for walking hence the name side (walk) not side (ride) |

No, cars are always in the way. Get the cars off the street to make room for the bicycles. |

I'm only answering to ask a question in return. Why did you bothering asking this question if you were only looking for an answer that validated your opinion, as evidenced by your comment, "Darren---thanks for agreeing with me. I'll pick you for the top answer"? That's childish.
Did you know that the safest place for bikes is, in fact, the road? In almost every state, bikes are considered vehicles and, thus, expected to follow the rules of the road, just like their fellow motorists. Only children under the age of 10 are expected to ride on the sidewalk, which pedestrians clutter.
Just like slow drivers, as well as terrible ones, are in the way for me, I've learned to deal with them. Bikers, joggers, runners, and pedestrians are just a minor inconvenience. I'd suggest you pay more attention to the road than to the ones I listed.
Peace :) |

NO, they AREN'T pedestrians. You can have your opinion all you want, but if I am walking down the sidewalk I don't want some bike hitting me, or swerving around. Bikes ARE motor vehicles and BELONG ON THE ROAD. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean they don't. I think YOU need to stay off the road. |

No. Bikes are in the way on the sidewalks too, especially in places like NYC where I'm from. Bikes are less in the way in the street than on the sidewalks. Drivers are generally more skilled and accustomed to avoiding bicycles than pedestrians are. |

I don't. They don't even have sidewalks in a lot of places, like my neighborhood. |

I agree, put bikes on the sidewalk. Those pesky jaywalkers won't know what hit them. |

Bikes are wheeled conveyances and belong in the street. The rules they follow mimic the rules for car traffic, they should obey traffic signs, stay right except to pass, and use signals. The sidewalk is for running, walking, kids playing hopscotch.
Since you believe bikes are in the way, perhaps this is not the bikes fault. Allow more time for your trips so you can relax along the way and not be in a hurry. An Amish buggy on the road slows traffic, should they be on the sidewalk as well? Stay back off them to allow yourself space, pass in the other lane when the way is clear, and share the road responsibly. |

All bikers should buy mountain bikes and ride on the side of the road. |
