Does anyone else hate driving when it's icy?

Sometimes even that is too fast. I drove through ice last year, in hilly conditions, and for great distances the line was actually down to 30 km/hr (20 mph). And some bozo passed, going uphill, on ice so thick we couldn't see anything of the pavement, no road markings, only white ice the colour of a skating rink. I wonder if he is still alive. All you can do is drive slow, keep the speed very steady, if you have to brake, just feather them, and float the steering, no sudden movements. Best of all, stay off the roads.
By the way, AWD or 4WD may get you going a little faster on ice, but you can't stop any faster! The stopping distance is totally dependent on the tires (and the braking technique), not the drive wheels.

Ice is the worst to drive on no doubt. Best thing to do is reduce speed and keep a safe distance from other drivers. I,m from the mid-west and we had freezing rain all day long and it's a skating rink to drive on so all you can do is use your head,slow down and keep your eyes open and remember it will take you 2 or 3 times as long to stop.

Yup, I hate it & avoid it when I can. Listen to local news broadcasts & figure out if you really need to go out. If you want to take the chance, I agree about taking your time & slowing down. Also, have extra distance between you & the vehicle in front of you. Accelerate & brake gently to avoid spinning out. Pack an emergency kit of extra clothes & other supplies in case you end up in a ditch or hotel room.

Look for tire spray while driving. If you see water coming up off of the road, it is wet. Just be sensibly cautious. If the roads look wet, but there is no spray & the hum of your tires changes pitch, you may be on black ice. Be careful! Good luck!!

Indeed it is worrisome. But the safest hint I could give: Change your vehicle when you could and but a Subaru. Imagine Forbes Magazine ranked Subaru as its 1st, 3rd, and 7th safest SUV on snow. (1. Outback; 3. Tribeca; 7. Forester XT). I definitely agree with them. I use to drive 4WD on snow using Nissan Safari and Isuzu Trooper but now hands down a Subaru Forester 2.5XT beats them in all aspects on snowy and icy roads.
Now, it is not worrisome anymore except for those who are also on the road skidding with their cars not equipped with AWD traction. Good thing with Subaru you can easily avoid or leave them fast and safely.
