Statistically 65 year old drivers are among the safest. The problem begins in the late 70's. Since people cannot retire at 65 any more your suggestion would be highly discriminatory to those drivers that were employed full time.
Here are some facts to ponder...
Male drivers from 16 to 27 are the worst drivers according to Insurance Company statistics. Next come female drivers over 80. Female drivers from 16 to 22 are third. There are exceptions to every rule, but the testing interval should be driven by your driving record, and certainly not your age.
FYI: I am a 65 year old driver. I drive a sports car and a lifted truck. I drive as fast and as far as most. I have not been ticketed for anything since I was 40. My insurance rates are as low as they can go. Would you discriminate against me because of my age and the fact that some moron with gray hair pissed you off?

Well bout 75 and up.
People only worry about drunks and
tired truckers.
But old people will try and kill ya!

I dont think you need to take the driving test again, however i do think you should have a thorough medical and a reaction test.Re taking the driving test will only clog the system and increase costs to the driver involved.I do agree that there are poor drivers out there, but remember would you want to re take your test again!

I think that if a person is over 65 and they get a ticket or are in an accident caused by that person, they should have to take it. HOWEVER, I do know several older people who have no driving issues and it isn't fair to them to have to take it again. Maybe it should be regulated to having to take the eye exam. Many that drive so bad/slow simply can't see good.

Big Bear
65-no. That's hardly old ! It's the 80 and above citizens that worry me.

phoekiebear
Perhaps you have a point but then how many new drivers who have just passed theirs think they own the road and can actually drive. whereas it takes years of practise to be a good driver. If your logic applied then all drivers who have had their licence for a year should be retested too!!! touche.

Most insurance companies would probably confirm that the highest risk lies within the youngest groups of drivers - those lacking experience but well-provided with unjustified confidence! Maybe it would be a good idea to require such inexperienced drivers to re-take their test every three years or so?

haha I dont think they all should take their tests again. I think they should be tested for their reaction time and well.. If they can see and read from a distance. If they can't do that... Done! Nomore! haha...

As a percentage they are about 4 times safer than the 18 to 25 year old drivers. They are less likely to be driving after taking drugs ,using a mobile phone while driving, distracted by the sound of loud music or misbehaving passengers and driving at excessive speed without experience.Check the accident statistics to see who has or causes the most accidents and then decide who needs to do their driving test again

fongski
For me, I think they should get physical examination first before renewing their license because I do believe that some senior citizens do drive very well but has eye problem which can easily corrected, but the problem is that they don't know their eye sights are deteriorating so there comes the problem.

bluff mike
The insurance industry says they are safer drivers than people under 27 years old. A better measure would be to make people re-take the exam every year until they are 30.

c.j.davies
I think they should when their renewal comes through but the test should be free.

k
When you get to 70 you have to get a doctor's permission to renew your licence.

Why wait til 65 it should be every 5 years from when you first get your licence

You have the car MOT tested to make sure that it has not deteriorated beyond a reasonable level of safety so why not your driving. It will weed out the bad ones and keep the others on their toes

Well, I'm 57, take a liberal view on speed-limits during the night, smoke while I drive and have to chat on the hands-free whilst driving an artic for a living.

If I had to take a car-test again, I would probably fail, because I use my left foot on the brake and awful lot, and change gear without clutch; especially when it's icy or snowy....far more effective than traction-control. I did that when I failed my test first-time at the age of 17 and 12 days.....the poor examiner almost threw a fit. So I toook ONE driving-lesson, just to find out what "they" wanted, and passed the next time!

Miraculously, in spite of these dreadful habits and dangerous practices, I haven't had an accident in 2,000,000 miles of driving.

(That's 4 times to the moon and back isn't it?)

Anyway, when I'm 65, I'm going to take up power-boat racing and hang-gliding I think, so if anyone has any sense, they'll stay well clear of me.

Edit: I've just remembered that I knew an old guy in his 80's who used to race an old Bugatti quite successfully!

Not, not at all - it is young drivers, drunks, lorry drivers and
"white van" drivers you should worry about.

Mick
You will find that most accidents involved younger people and they are not many drivers over 65 involved in accidents

meeno
definatley, i've followed old drivers before and they crawl along at 20 mph which is just as dangerous as doing 70 mph in my eyes!

Old Fart
Why, I find a lot of teenagers unsafe, in fact a high number downright dangerous. have you thought of taking the advanced driving test? I also think that people who modify cars which can`t be used on the roads of today a bit suspect, why would they want to unless they are for a race track.

i would go further than that, and say anyone who does anything wrong on the roads from parking to causing death should be banned for life, as we all know it is the under 25s, white van man, speeding trucks, bus drivers falling asleep at the wheel and people who drive company cars should be banned, every one but me and maybe you.

no but i do think there should be a min and max speed limit like there is in some countries there is nothing more annoying than being stuck behind an oldie doing 10 mph!!!

Definitely, age reduces reaction times, eyesight, and even sense in some people. The amount of accidents caused by old people is horrendous, and they have no idea how to watch for bikers com,ing up behind them - unless they've been a biker themselvers...

And they need to be kept up to date with any changes in road laws, stopping distances on new road surfaces etc...

Personally I believe everybody should be retested at least every 10 years - but it should be free like it is in the states

Yes, I agree whole heartily. Sometimes I think every one should be tested every few years or so to learn their road manners again too. It is scary being a pedestrian. Between the ones who are just plain too old to drive and the ones who just drive and if they own the road.........................
