I'm tired of seeing people slow down -10mph or more when driving over RR tracks. What (possibly explaining in percentage) is the probability of damaging your vehicle when driving the same constant speed over RR tracks as opposed to jabbing your brakes risking having someone rear end you to save your suspension. Is it worth it to slow down over RR tracks?

really depends on how rough they are ... as for damaging suspension one pot hole could do more damage hitting a curb at a parking lot one to many times sure it dont take much some times fast or slow most cars out of alignment and people dont know it i dont slow down unless its rough and i bounce then ill slow down next time most rr tracks not that rough but some are not much more than driving into a parking lot |

Think about it. When you sail over a RR crossing, your springs and shocks extend. When you land, not only does this put a strain on the suspension, but it's a good way to ruin an oil pan if you bottom out. |

It may not actually damage the suspension, but it will certainly wear out certain suspension components faster. Slower speed = less violent suspension travel = good. Besides, if someone plows into the rear of your car, it is almost always their fault in the eyes of the insurance companies. |

it depends on your speed and how big the bump is, but overall, no. over regular washboard mythbusters found that the suspension and car actually rode smoother at 50 than it did at 25 (actual scientific tests with a high speed camera) |
