Absolutely not. A tire pressure gauge tells you the tire pressure.
By "thumping" the tires, you listen to the sound of the thump and it will indicate if there is a significant difference in pressure between two tires mounted together.
Personally, I use a ball peen hammer. Kind of like a bell ringer, and handy to ward off unwanted horizontal highway hostesses. |

A tire thumper is only good to tell you if a tire is flat or not. There is only one way to check the pressure in a tire and that is with a tire pressure gage. |

It doesn't tell you if the tire is inflated to the correct pressure, but it tells you if it's flat.
Often you can't tell, since with duals, one tire can be supporting the weight and a flat one LOOKS ok, since there's no weight on it. |

Yes, but you will have to do it enough to become experienced at recognizing the tone of sound and the "bounce" it makes for different pressures.
Of course if it is already flat - it will be pretty obvious with no "bounce", and a "dead" sound.
I thought that a store-bought "tire thumper" was always too light in weight.
I liked to use a good size ball peen hammer, or my "cheater pipe" (used with chain boomers).

Yeah, like kicking a tire. The hard it is and the more it bounces off, the more pressure. The softer it is and less it bounces off, indicates lower tire pressure. |

You cannot actually determine the true tire pressure by banging on a tire. But you can tell by the difference in the sound if one tire has a different pressure than the others. |

yes it does but most dont care and drive on low pressure tires that blow. they like to watch the tires shred on the highways and hit cars as they pass by |
