Does the street car light really respond to the pedestrian cross push button on the pole?
|
Do they really work? Sometimes I push them and still wait forever for the street light to change so I can cross the street.

They do work very reliably regardless of what other 'experts' and 'statisticians' say. Traffic signal controllers are very complex time clocks. When you push the button the controller remembers your 'call for pedestrian service'. When there is a gap in vehicle traffic, the controller will service your call. Depending upon the traffic pattern and volume, intersection design and size and proximity to other intersections and many other factors, the average cycle for servicing pedestrian calls (and vehicle calls) for service are about 90 seconds. I've kept this very basic as Yahoo does not allow for a long, detailed explanation. |

They have always worked for me, if you find one that doesn't cooperate, I suggest letting the city know about it so it can be fixed. |

it does work but it will NOT make the signal change to Green (or to walk
Immediately you have to wait for the traffic signal to go though its
cycles before the walk signal will turn green for you |

statistics say that 87% of the push poles aren't even powered. so they work rarely. |

but it depends on how busy the street is. |

I think Braniac did a segment about this. I believe they concluded that they made no difference whatsoever. |

not for me. i think it's just there for psychological reasons. it just makes you think it's working for you but really, it runs on its own time.
thats why i trust my eyes, and cross when i see it's safe, not when a little white guy flashes. |

No. It's why in denver they don't even put the button on to give you the illusion of control. |

Yes, but like the traffic lights - if they take ages you can walk back and forth on the concrete and the cencors (sorry cant spell it) react quicker.
I reverse the car slightly then roll forward at a red light and it changes a second later.gfgd |

Some do and some are there just to give you the illusion of control. |
