Does usage of cell phones cause explosion in petrol pumps?

The guys on the show 'Myth Busters' found there wasn't enough of a spark. Still I err on the side of safety and don't have my phone with me when getting fuel.

The only in-depth study I have seen of this apparent phenomenon was on season 1, episode 2 of the TV programme MythBusters. If you haven't come across show, it is where two engineers/scientists (the "MythBusters") test common urban myths, conspiracy theories and accepted truths to see is they are true or not.

The proved conclusively that cell phones cannot cause explosions at petrol pumps. They even rigged up a cell phone in a tank of concentrated petrol fumes and could not cause the gas to ignite. Nor could they track down any real-life precedent for the ban on using mobile phones at petrol bowsers, with all supposed news stories having no basis in fact.

Never in the whole wide world would that happen unless u open ur cellphone battery and somehow get the current to go through to the petrol or diesel. its a myth that has been busted about three times by various people, atleast thats what I have heard.

Ok there you myth buster freaks, the myth was never debunked as they did get the level on vapor to explode when the cell rang, the this was that it was so much vapor, that in the normal setting of an open fueling station this would be highly irregular. But it could happen. it isn't static it is an electrical frequency that can spark in the phone.

The real car blower upper is the getting back in the car after starting to fuel. this disconnects you from a good ground and before you touch the handle touch the pump....Watch this

Yes it has happened it is caused by static electricity.

Is there a possibility? Yes, but not enough to worry about.

You are much more likely to die in a car crash than from someone dropping their cell phone while refueling and blowing up the gas station.

Same thing with sharks... you almost have to TRY to get eaten to die from a shark attack.

Yes it does. I was pumping gas a few weeks ago and was talking on my phone. When I pulled the nozzle out of the tank, a flame shot up around the phone and burned half of my ear off. I can't wear sunglasses anymore because I only have one ear to hold them in place.
Doctors say they will try skingrafts. Be careful out there!

any radio transmitting (including cell phones) could spark or static charge and therefore cause an explosion...

in most US states it is illegal to fuel any vehicle (especially with gasoline) while transmitting on any radio, including a cellular phone

check with your local police department or highway patrol

According to snopes.com there has never been a confirmed case of someone's cell phone causing a fire at at gas station.

A Shell oil executive wrote a warning lable that stated there is a possibility of creating a static spark while using the telephone and filling your gas tank. If it happens it is theoretically possible to ignite the fumes near your gas tank.

here is the article on snopes.com

put the phone down for a minute and fill your car then you wont have to worry about it.Its bad enough you hold up traffic and now you want to slow us down at the pumps.whats the matter you so lonely you have to talk 24/7 or are you getting directions on how to gas up your car.Why cant people opperate without a phone stuck to their head?
