Drink driving: If you knew that there were no police about, would you be prepared to drink and drive?
Find answers to your legal question.

Drink driving: If you knew that there were no police about, would you be prepared to drink and drive?

Let us say, for example, that the police had gone on strike. (Not going to happen of course, but this is the hypothetical situation).
You have had three pints of strong beer, are a little drunk, and need to drive home three miles out of town into a residential area. Would you be prepared to do it?

What are your reasons for or against?

Fluffy I don't see what your problem is with me asking this question - I'm not condoning drink driving.

My brother was killed in a hit n run by a drink driver.

*** hole!

Ok sorry. It ruins lives - it ruined my whole family, so I guess people should think about their actions. it is not just about dodging the police.

Why do people need a law to let them do the right thing? There is a reason for the law against drinking and driving. It is to protect people. To dink and drive when there is nobody to see that you do not do it is just plain stupid. If there is a policeman or not will not change the fact that you are not able to control the vehicle like a sober person.

If you want to swim across a river but there is a policeman telling you not to do it because the river is full of crocodiles will you swim across the river the next day if the policeman is not there?

I think it is time we humans start to use our brains, a driver under the influence is nothing but a murderer.

yorkie
no. i couldn't live with the guilt if i hit anything.

i'd probably trash my car ...

No, you reaction times drop, so that tree thats infront of you at 50mph, don't worrie you will hit it before you brake enough

no we always have a designated driver, there may not be any police on the road but what about other people. could you really live with yourself if you hit an innocent person.

Against: It's not the police I'm worried about, it's the possibility of killing someone and going to jail - ruining my life.

I would not be prepared to drive if I was drinking heavy. The facts are that every year drunk drivers kill innocent people because of their negligence. Drivers that drive drunk are under the influence of alcohol. Alcohol is a substance that impairs the judgment because of the chemicals mixed with the brain waves. Your reaction time is slowed down and you are not able to distinguish between reality and what you see in your mind. What I am saying is that drinking and driving does no one else no good. The stats prove this. Here are the stats for 2007.

*In 2007, an estimated 12,998 people were killed in alcohol-impaired driving crashes1 – a decline of 3.7 percent from the 13,491 fatalities in 2006.

*The fatality rate, per 100 million vehicle miles of travel (VMT),2 decreased to 0.43 – the lowest on record.

*Thirty-two States had decreases in the number of alcohol-impaired driving fatalities in 2007, as com-pared to 2006.

Basically what these stat say is that the fatalities and those involved in accidents are in great proportion. You cannot deny the fact that thousands each year are killed or injured because of drunk driving. That is why laws are in place to stop them from driving impaired. Many still do it, but the laws lessen these accidents. So even if police were not around, the fact is it is still wrong because you are putting others in danger.

No. Reason, when out for an evening and after one pint I know I should not be behind the wheel.

Anyone who does think they are capable is deluded. There is still a culture among the masses that seem to think they are more than capable, although some just do not have a clue.

No I am not that stupid

Police or no police I would never consider drink driving. I wouldn't want to be responsible for taking my own or others lives all because of something avoidable like this. If a single drop of alcohol touches my lips I refuse to drive at all.

EDIT: Why the thumbs down I am just speaking for myself I am not accusing the questioner or other answerers here of drink driving!

EDIT: Thanks ANDY BIKER, just thought I may have been misunderstood for a minute lol. I am not always that great with giving clear answers :-)

Nope.........reasons.......... I don't drink and I don't break the law.

I never drink and drive.

D you are just the sort of person we need off the road. I agree there are plenty of poor drivers on the road but drinking and driving is totally unacceptable. I suppose you are the type who thinks they drive better after a drink.

D
Yes I would. While it is dangerous, there are a lot of morons on the road whose driving would still be far inferior to mine. Drink Driving can cause accidents as can speeding. The biggest case of accidents is poor driving. Drink driving and speeding get all the attention because this lazy government can't be bothered dealing with the poor standard of driving in this Country, and the police are no where to be seen on the roads/motorways unless they are monitoring speed.

Yes I would. With no police on the road you would be able to drive at a leisurely slow pace and not worry that you look suspicious.

I've drunk quite a bit and drove on numerous occassions. The limits at the moment are quite ridiculous anyway. Two pints and you're over the limit? Pffft.
