Driving age limit going up?

Driving age limit going up?

Hey, I'm in the 1993 generation and was born in April, I was wondering if these rumours going around about by the time I'm 17 the age will have just about gone up to 18? Is that true? If so, what time do you know in that year will it be?

I sure hope I can rush a few lessons but with ease if that happens! Otherwise I can't get to my aspirated collage as It's too far away and there are no bus or bike routes that I know of going to Middelsbrough's 'Askam Bryann'. Grr. That'd be so annoying! the timing and everything of it!

This rumour has been around for as long as I can remember, certainly back as far as when I was learning to drive nearly 20 years ago!

Don't worry...the Driving Standards Agency who run the driving tests have, this Summer, started a consultation regarding changes to the way learner drivers are taught and tested. This would have been a golden opportunity to increase the age for learning or taking a test but they did not include this in the consultation.

The consultation, like all of these things will take many years to come to fruition and, when it does, will be in a vastly watered-down form. It will mean some significant changes to the test, but even so, they won't be implemented for at least 5 or so years so should not affect you in any way.

I hope that puts your mind at ease.

PS.I am also speaking as a qualified driving instructor.

PPS.As the poster above states, "Eco Safe Driving" is now included in the driving test in the UK. However, if you are taking a test, it will not have any influence on the result if you drive without Eco Safe Driving in mind - the examiner will simply add additional notes with regard to Eco Safe Driving

If it does go up to 18, I'll be glad.

Too many teens are being turned loose out there with minimal training and hardly any experience. I don't think a 16 year old can fathom the consequences of what can happen out there.

The older, the better. Teens should have to wait until they are legal adults before getting a drivers license. At that time, they can hopefully take responsibility for their actions should something happen.

well my driving instructor said its not true... and even if it is, you'll still be able tpo drive at 17, just not take the test till your 18, so you can still drive with a provisional and a parent in the car (who is an experienced driver)

hope this helps

Just rumors for now, nothing has been set in stone yet....

There are many ways of reducing the accident rate in young drivers being discussed, putting up the starting age is just one of them. None have yet been decided on so for now don't worry.

I'm in the 1993 generation and I was outraged too!
But it's just rumours for now, hopefully nothing will actually happen.
If it does happen though I think it's around summertime it was changing I heard..
Not 100% certain though..

I do believe that there is some (slight) truth to that rumour. If it is brought in it will simply limit the age that you can take your test. In this case, the age to pass your test may be increased to 18. This can only be a good thing as it will allow a young driver to gain a years worth of supervised on the road experience before being let loose on their own. The theory behind it being that a more experienced young driver is less likely to cause or be involved in an accident.

I hope it goes to 21 to day.

It's only in discussion at the moment so don't worry :)
it'll all be on the news when it's near. Your forgetting it has to be passed in the house of commons , the house of lords and then the house of commons again before the queen signs approval. This normally takes ages.

Im a driving instructor and know that the driving test is going to change.
next week 'eco-safe-driving' will be part of your test.

But no, the age is not going up.

I hope because some teeenager can't drive............but then again, they should do that law that no teenager can't drive unless they have a high shcool diploma.....I think in new mexico they're gonna do that but the rest of the states should too

Well where i live you can drive by yourself when your 16 but you cant drive past 9 over here its mandatory to drive cuz there is stuff you can walk to but you mostly need a car
