Driving an automatic car for the first time?
|
Hi all. I'll be driving an automatic car for the first time. Have been driving a manual all these years. Could someone pls help me with these queries? I really appreciate it. Sorry if my questions sound dumb ;)
My car has the following gears - P, R, N, D and S
1) When manoeuvring my car (head in first) into a parking lot, should my gear be in P or D?
2) When stopping my car at a traffic junction with a slope, do I leave it in D and apply foot brake, or N (and apply the foot brake and handbrake)? Do automatic cars roll backwards when moving off from a slope?
3) What exactly is the function of the N gear? I heard not many people use it
4) What is the gear S for and how do I engage it?
Thank you all. Serious answers please :)

P = park...meaning you are at a full and complete stop and have no intention of moving the car anymore.
R = Reverse...driving backwards like backing out of a parking spot
N = nuetral...meaning the car is free to roll but the throttle will not make the car move. It is like have the clutch applied on a manual transmission.
D= Drive... go forward. It will automatically take you through the gears no need to shift...If you are going forward keep it in D. When stopped (such as at a light) just apply foot brake and hold until it is safe to proceed.
S= is like your low gear...like staying in 1st gear on a manual transmission. The automatic transmission will not automatically shift gears if you have it in this setting. the purpose for this is when you are climbing a large incline.
Automatic cars typically do not roll back when stopped unless the hill is ridiculously steep. In this case simply hold the foot back until you are ready to proceed forward. |

1. D.......drive.
2. D.......apply the brake.
3. N.......neutral is used for letting the wheels roll freely without being propelled by the drive train. Some times that you will need neutral gear is when the vehicle is being towed.
4. S.......sport gear, faster shifting mostly in sporty cars. |
