Driving in snow and ice tips?
|
I am terrified of driving in snowy and icy conditions. Any good tips I could follow? I know to slow down, but what is a safe speed? I do a lot of highway driving since I have a long commute to/from work. Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

again you young folks want a black and white answere for every situation ain't never gonna happen. you need to be wise enough to know when conditions are bad and take all measures to be safe. generally if you think everyone is driving to slow your driving to fast, if you think everyone is driving to fast, your driving to slow. go with the flow< |

Decrease your speed and leave yourself plenty of room to stop. You should allow at least three times more space than usual between you and the car in front of you.
Brake gently to avoid skidding. If your wheels start to lock up, ease off the brake.
Turn on your lights to increase your visibility to other motorists.
Keep your lights and windshield clean.
Use low gears to keep traction, especially on hills.
Don't use cruise control or overdrive on icy roads.
Be especially careful on bridges, overpasses and infrequently traveled roads, which will freeze first. Even at temperatures above freezing, if the conditions are wet, you might encounter ice in shady areas or on exposed roadways like bridges.
Don't pass snow plows and sanding trucks. The drivers have limited visibility, and you're likely to find the road in front of them worse than the road behind.
Don't assume your vehicle can handle all conditions. Even four-wheel and front-wheel drive vehicles can encounter trouble on winter roads.
The best advice for driving in bad winter weather is not to drive at all, if you can avoid it.
Don't go out until the snow plows and sanding trucks have had a chance to do their work, and allow yourself extra time to reach your destination.
It's helpful to practice winter driving techniques in a snowy, open parking lot, so you're familiar with how your car handles. Consult your owner's manual for tips specific to your vehicle.

if u skid on ice, turn towards the skid not away. Also, drive slow like 10 below, or use ur judgement and see what everyone else is doing. And since u take the highway, the almost always clean the snow on the highway, just be careful of black ice. And to aviod skidded again go slow even if everyone around u is going fast they can pass u up if they want. |

If you have to drive in snowy or icy conditions make sure that your vehicle is equipped for bad weather, that you have warm, waterproof clothing and shoes/boots with you in case of any hold ups on the road. Always carry a torch and spare battery and some food and maybe a flask of something hot like coffee or soup. Drive in accordance with the road conditions at the time, and remember that if the road is icy it will take your vehicle TEN times longer to stop than it would do normally. |

what u talkin' bout?

I know what you mean, I don't like it either. Just remember to always watch for the other guy, always size up situations. If you are approaching a vehicle that looks as if they might be going very slow or possibly stopped, be ready. Before you get to the road that you want to turn at, slow down and be sure to give the other guy a fair warning about where you are going (put your directional on). Drive according to weather and road conditions. Always have your vehicle under control. Remember that if you go into a skid, turn your wheels with it. Lastly don't talk or text on a cell phone while driving. |

drive in a lower gear. If your car is automatic, use "2" (PRND321) If its a manual, use a lower gear than normal. That way you gt more traction.
Keep alert, slow down, break slowly, no sudden moves, learn to handle a skid. |

"Safe speed" is impossible to answer, since it depends on conditions at the time. Slowing down is about it, except to keep your windows clear of snow and ice--all of them--along with your head- and taillights. (A lot of people forget to clean those.) Make sure your defroster/defogger work, and keep your wits about you. Keep plenty of room ahead of you to adjust for the people who don't think of these things. |

First get four winter tires, the technology in these tires is amazing. Proper winter ice radials will outperform studded tires of days past.
Drive slower and smoother, leave longer spaces between you and the person in front of you. If you do shop for a new vehicle one day, absolutely get one with stability control feature, its the best thing since anti lock brakes for driving on slippery surfaces. |
