Driving lesson trouble?

i've been having driving lessons for about 10 weeks now and i have my good days and bad days. had one today, and it went terribly. i get on well with my instructor, i find it frustrating sometimes when i put it in the wrong gear. it just felt like everything was going wrong today, i got better towards the end but i feel so dissapointed in myself and i know my instructor was to. how do i get better? it feels like other road users intimidate me just coz i'm a learner, i just want to do well and get my license. help!xxxx

Hang in there Amy. I know exactly how you feel! There were times when I couldn't do a single thing right in a lesson then the next lesson I had I was faultless!Everyone, even the most experienced drivers slip gears and stall the car.Don't let anyone intimidate you.All of these fools were learners once too & they'd do well to remember that. You've already got over the most difficult hurdle which is actually having the guts & determination to start taking lessons.I had a provisional licence bought for me on my 17th birthday & it was 18 years before I took my 1st lesson! Now,another 18 months on, I finally passed my test 2 weeks ago at the 4th attempt. There were plenty of times when I felt like throwing in the towel.Keep at it and you'll soon have that licence.I did it & you can too.You won't regret it!
Good Luck!

everyones in a rush..no one shows any real consideration to learners, to ge honest we just want to get past you as quickly as possible, and it must be intimidating, with everything seeming to happen at once and in quick succession...

learning to drive is a bit like a video game, when you first play you die, it takes lots of practice before you even get to the end of level one... and suddenly before long you finish the game...

setbacks happen, and they wil seem to happen a lot, but its an illusion, youare undoubtedly getting better, just not as fast as you'd like... be patient. and clock as many miles as you can... driving is very hands on... and theres no substitute for experience.

good luck

You are too hard on yourself. This happens to all learner drivers. When I was learning there were days I constantly stalled and got my gears and pedals all mixed up, it happens. Be patient. The more lessons you get the more comfortable you will feel out on the road. Don't worry about other drivers, they will know you are a learner driver and will know you are going to make mistakes, they have been there too. Just take your time and relax and you'll be ok :)

Everyone has good and bad days while they are learning...its normal. I still have good and bad days and I've been driving 25 years!

just relax and don't think of the other road users
like you are ,there just moving object as long as you
don't hit them!
I'm sure you are not your instructors worst pupil as well
remember we were all learners once.
good luck

Don't worry we all have off days and it can put you i had a lesson just before my first test and mounted the pavement ended up on the wrong side of the road and felt like crying but then come to the next lesson its all different.
I know how you feel with other drivers it feels like you are a big inconvinience to them and they are constantly wanting you to break the speed limits else they will be up your backside constantly. Keep going and put this behind you you'll see that you are miles better next time trust me.

Sounds to me like a severe case of anxiety over your performance during the lesson.
By going into the lesson with a predetermined expectation of the outcome (either doing well, or badly) you may be setting yourself up for disappointment.
I am a pilot & budding flying instructor, & as instructors we learn to try to leave our students with a good feeling about the outcome of the lesson. So I have to ask you honestly, did your belief that your driving instructor was disappointed in you come from him/her, or did it actually come from you?
Also, as an experienced driver I certainly don't go out of my way to intimidate any student driver that I may encounter on the road, it's quite the opposite as a matter of fact.

Whenever I go for a new lesson with my flying instructor, I try to free myself of any expectations of delivering a perfect performance on my part during the lesson. I decide that I am doing this to please myself, & not him. If anybody needs to deliver a perfect example of flying during the lesson, it's HIM, not me. In the end I am rewarded by having learned something new that I can add to my already extensive experience as a pilot no matter how small that something might be. One of the things I catch myself doing sometimes when I feel my anxiety level rising during a lesson, is that I tend to do everything too quickly. (Similar to when you keep putting the car in the wrong gear) I need to remind myself that I am not in a competition with anybody, & to SLOW DOWN, & think about what I am doing.

So I suggest you try to relax BEFORE you go for your next driving lesson, & be determined ONLY to actively participate in the lesson, & the practical exercises that your instructor gives you, & see if you can try to enjoy the experience a little more.

Good Luck!

It's like the old joke "How do you get to Carnegie Hall?....Practice, baby, practice"
Same with driving...... only with practice and time are you going to get better. Do not let the bad days throw you, learn from them and move on. Kicking yourself will do no good.

glad2bhalfbreed
hang in there you will get better the more you drive the more your skills will improve

this is what i felt like when i was a learner driver but the way to handle the gear stick is to keep your arm bent and relaxed.

Just be calm and patient. Forget about the other road users, just think that they were once in your shoes.
I know sometimes people think its good to try and distract a learner, but they're just being stupid.
I always try to be courteous towards learners as I can all too remember what it was like when I was learning.
Good luck with your lessons x

if it was me i would have a extra lesson a week on top of what your haveing now so you can get the feel of the instuctors car,try not to drive a different car or your be saying everything is different then you will get confused, keep learning the high way code book and chill out.

10 weeks of class and you still can't shift? Are you scared of something? Driving is no joke, and you need to be confident in your abilities or you are going to kill yourself or somebody else. Driving isn't rocket science, either and it sounds like you're making it more difficult than it really is.
