Driving on private land that cross a road with public access?

I work for a company that employees me to drive a straddle carrier at my local dock port,which is on private land but in order to pass one side of the port to the other we must cross over a road which has public access.when we cross this road automatic barriers are lowered similar to railway crossings, my employer tells me i do not need a driving license but im not so sure, Am i breaking the law please help

not really to cross a road dont have to have any license and if your not driving a car or a truck dont have to have them at all like a farm tractor your not diving on the roads your just crossing a road and then there is that automatic barriers i wouldnt worry about it i drove a tractor on roads for years never stop and really your not driving on the roads your crossing a road not the same thing and what laws do you think you might be breaking speeding illegal passing failing to signal what law you think sorry they all wrong your boss is right dont need one to cross a road

Crossing a road at 90 degrees is not the same as driving on the road. The company has certain obligations with they are probably meeting with the barriers.

No you do not,because you are not driving ON the public road.Same as a farmer,and that is why you have the automatic gates.You are all good.

You are legally allowed to drive directly across a public road, in order to gain access to property on the opposite side. This applies to any vehicle, even if you do not have a driving licence. However, you must NOT turn left or right onto the carriageway.

Since a straddle carrier cannot be licenced for road use, anyway, the question of legality does not actually arise. Furthermore, even though the road may have public access, it will still be privately owned by the port authority and legally classed as a private road.

You should not need a licence for this and I doubt the vehicle would be road legal if you did have one wnyway

The second you take the vehicle OFF private land ONTO the public road, you MUST have a full driving licence.

although the barriers are lowered technically the road you are crossing falls within the the road traffic act rules and regulations

I doubt that you're breaking the law: Train drivers don't need a car licence to go through level crossings, the principle is the same here.
