Some people are severely affected by glare at night and some people suffer from what they call night blindness where their vision is impaired and they can't see as well. Humans (and most animals) have tiny sensors in their eyes called Rods and Cones - google it -- which determine your visual acuity at night as well as your ability to differentiate colors at night.

Hi
Driving at night is completely different to driving during the daytime, distances are harder to work out and then there's added eyestrain from the headlights of other vehicles and if this is how your family treats it's visitors I'm not surprised they want to leave early, at least they made the effort in the first place.

It is not a lame excuse, it is quite scary to drive that fast at night in the dark. I know lots of people who refuse to do it (mainly older members of my family). If they are a new driver as well, it can be very scary.
Even if it is an excuse, does it matter? If they don't want to be there, let them go! |

Something about the lights.. my husband, who is iin his late 20s, HATES driving at night. During the day he's fine. Docs can't find a think wrong, which is why he continues to drive. |

It can be dangerous at Night, that is when most of the Crashes occur . Especially in the Early Morning with People making Mistakes, also Loads of Drunks on the Road.
Also when a Person gets into a Car their Eyes are not properly Adjusted for awhile to the Night time and are probably Blurry from being indoors.
So I dont Blame them for being a little Apprenhesive. |

Utter rubbish - leave your poor cousin alone! Some people don't like driving at night. Have you tried it? It is a lot harder than day driving.
I happen to like it.
Please grow up, it sounds very plausible. |

I don't think it's a lame excuse and I do understand that you didn't say it. Motorways are awful at night, they are boring enough during the day. People have seen things on motorways that aren't even there, that's why so many accidents happen. I think your Cousin is very wise if she feels unsure, better to be safe than sorry. |

Different drivers have various likes and dislikes.
Personally, I love driving at night. Give me a car with good headlights and I'm happy, less cars on the road, mostly HGVs, the drivers of which mainly know what they are doing, unlike Jack Salesman in his 'Audeo' hogging the outside lane!!
I don't like town driving, Snow, Rain, etc. |

I agree, any competant driver SHOULD be able to drive in any situation. BUT, respect their opinion.

You are ARROGANT and WRONG.
A competent driver knows their limits and drives within them. Just because certain drivers do not like driving in a certain situation does not reflect upon their competence.
Your cousin took the right decision and demonstrated a concern about road safety that is seriously lacking in your family.
I just hope that none of your family live near me; it is THEY who I fear meeting on the roads. |
