Ok here a few questions that i really need help with.

1) When switching lanes. I understand the blind spot is at the rear doors. So just turn your head 90 degrees and you can see it right?. Well how far back does the other cars have to be to safely switch lanes. (Far back from your car)

Check your mirrors and then signal - this shows people that you want to switch lanes. Watch how quickly the cars in the other lane are catching you up - this will influence your decision. Its not really the distance that counts, more the speed!
The look into the blind spot is really only a safety check before you go, to make sure there is no-one outside your mirrors field of view.If someone is passing you - let them go and then check again.
If there is alot of traffic on busy dual carriageways, after you have signalled then keep checking your blind spot for a suitable gap - someone with manners will adjust their speed to let you in (but only if you are indicating, otherwise they wont know!)

You should be able to see the front of the car whose lane your are about to move into. I usually start to accelerate before switching lanes so that I can see if someone is riding in my blind spot. Also get one of those tiny round mirrors that stick to your side mirror.

At least an equivalent of the 1 or 2 second rule, approximately at least a car length and a half etc.

If you can see their headlights from your rear view mirror. I've always used that as a tool and learned it from my instructor on my test when I asked him the same question :)

a few car lengths.. you dont want to cut them off. just think of people merging into your lane, how close are they to your car?

Every one has good answers but don't forget your signal this will also alert the other driver after you are sure you are clear.
