I'm a driving instructor and have this problem all the time. I have had a few girls who were REALLY great drivers, yet on the morning of their test, we go for an hours drive beforehand and they do all sorts of wierd and wonderful things they have NEVER done before! Its all down to nerves - and i can understand it really - having some random old man in a fluoresent waistcoat sitting there, not talking is pretty intimidating!
What i generally say to pupils who are in a state before the test is "what's the WORST that's going to happen?" they'll say "I'm sorry, you didn't make it this time" that's it! and that doesn't mean your a crap driver - it just means luck was against you on the day!
Unfortunately the driving test is a bit like taking your GCSE's and only being able to get an A* or nothing. If you were to do really really well, but make a couple of silly mistakes in your GCSE's you would get a C or a B (a good pass). But because of the way the driving test is - that would be a fail!
I think the best thing for you to do is take a few deep breaths before you start and just keep a real positive mind. Even if you do something wrong - put it behind you and carry on - I've had people pass their test after hitting the kerb 3 times!
If you make a mistake remember this - a) the examiner might not think it's as serisous as YOU do. b) the examiner might not have even realised you did it!
Keep your cool OK? focus on what your going to do next - not what you just did! And if you get a bit shaky - do what i did on my driving test. Ask if you can pull over, find somewhere safe to park, check your shoulder before opening your door and get out and stand on the pavement for a bit of fresh air! Remember, your examiner might seem moody, and miserable but he has a lot to concentrate on,and he IS human believe it or not, and would probably sooner have you driving well then after a quick breather, than to carry on driving nervously!
Good Luck!!!!! |

You have to pretend you've already passed. The examiners want to see confidence. You have to prove that you can deal with any situation on the road. If you are a confident driver and you make a slight mistake on the reverse, then most of them will overlook it. Just show them you CAN drive a car forwards and backwards! |

If a driving examiner can rattle you with little things, you fail, and it saves your life. Any examiner knows if he can rattle you, you will blow a major decision the first time another driver does something unexpected, and you will have, or cause, an accident.
So, if you want to pass, you need to take lessons long enough that driving is almost second nature. |

Well I failed my test five times but passed my Advanced Driving test first time ... it's all down to confidence for many people and nerves can shatter that. When I did pass on my sixth attempt, I had literally sweated my nerves out the day before and became strangely calm on the day. You just need to remember that examiners are just people, like you and me, and are merely there to assess that you have made them feel safe and comfortable for the duration of the test. Give them one point of major concern and they will fail you. So look on the test as giving your passenger a safe and comfortable ride and the confidence should be there for you. Good luck ... |

Luck you said "just joking" in case all of the hundreds of driving examiners reading your question remember your name and deliberately fail you.
That was my point!! |

Don't ever think a particular part of the test is over. For example, when you're done parallel parking, and they ask you to go park in reverse, you still can't hit the parallel parking cones. Also don't forget to signal while parking. |

Focus on the exam and if they try to start a conversation with you half way through either ignore them or give short answers. |

If your mixed race and you plan in taking your test in sidcup-don't! Ar a male white examines with a newcastle accent is racist and won't judge you on your driving-but your colour! So don't go to sidcup unless your white. |
