Driving tips for driving on icy roads?

Well I drive a '00 mustang with no traction control or ABS. What can I do to keep from slipping all over the road, especially when braking?

Keep a reasonable distance from other cars. Down shift to slow vehicle down applies to both autos and manuals. You wont be driving very fast on ice or snow anyways so it wont screw up your tranny. I find it better than using brakes. Dont try to stop or slow down at the last minute.

I'm in west central Wisconsin. In a car like yours I would add some sandbags to the trunk of your car. This will make it a lot less tail-happy. Nothing grips ice so keep a lot of distance between you and other vehicles.

When turning, try and do most of your braking before turning. Braking on ice while turning with no ABS will cause a slide. It's much safer to add a little gas when on ice than to be going too fast to begin with.
